With the supreme court justice Anthony Kennedy retiring, Donald Trump and the Republican party have been gifted a second supreme court pick, which is expected to shift the ideology of the nation's high court to the right.

Trump's first high court nominee, Justice Neil Gorsuch, was confirmed in April 2017. With Kennedy acting as a swing vote in many 5-4 court rulings - including upholding Roe v. Wade and legalizing gay marriage - his departure gives Trump the opportunity to put a solid conservative majority on the court.

Republicans now hold a bare 51-49 majority in the Senate, although that includes the ailing Senator John McCain of Arizona.

The other two older justices, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 85, and Stephen Breyer, 79, are Democratic appointees who would not appear to be going anywhere during a Trump administration if they can help it.
