Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and her partner Clarke Gayford have called their new daughter Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford.

Mr Gayford, known in New Zealand as the "first bloke", is the presenter of a fishing show, and Ms Ardern was the youngest New Zealand PM in 150 years, but she said they would not put pressure on their new baby.

"We chose Neve because we just liked it, and when we met her we thought she looked like she suited the name".

She said Neve meant bright, radiant and snow.

Ardern explained Te Aroha was a rural town in the Waikato region of New Zealand where her family is from.

"Te Aroha. was our way of reflecting the amount of love this baby's been shown before she even arrived".

Ms Ardern said she and her partner had opted for the alternative spelling Neve rather than the traditional Niamh, to avoid confusion.

Ms Ardern made her first public appearance on Sunday since giving birth to her daughter on Thursday.

"So I hope for little girls and boys that there's a future where they can make choices about how they raise their family and what kind of career they have, that are just based on what they want and what makes them happy", she said.

Ardern is the first world leader in almost 30 years to have a child while in office.

But the Persians kept their shape superbly, restricting Spain to a handful of chances from David Silva in the first half. Queiroz was nonetheless proud of his players, and said they would head into the Portugal decider with confidence.

Adern, glowing with motherhood, said it was a pleasure to finally introduce their little one to New Zealand and shared the chosen name for the first time since the birth.

"To me, in these moments, in those messages [from people around the country], we found a reflection of the kindness of New Zealand people".

The pregnancy news late past year came as a surprise to Ms Ardern, who then had to simultaneously deal with both intense negotiations to form a government and morning sickness.

Speaking to reporters as she held her daughter in a blanket and beanie, an overjoyed Ardern thanked the public for their support said "we're not placing any great expectations on this little baby except for happiness and love".

Ms Ardern has assured commentators it'll be business as usual during her six weeks off.

Ardern announced Neve's birth on her official Instagram account Thursday, saying the baby arrived at 4.45 pm local time, weighing 3.31 kilograms (7.3 pounds).

The plan was to go home and spend the next six weeks focusing on her family, says Ardern.

"Welcome to our village wee one", Ardern wrote in the caption.

She told media she was "sleep-deprived but doing well" and thanked the midwives, nurses, doctors, security and communications staff at Auckland hospital before addressing the nation.
