Addicted To Gaming? You Are Suffering From Mental Disorder, As Per WHO!

  • Video gaming is described as 'a pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour'

Poznyak said that the expectation is that the classification of "gaming disorder" means health professionals and systems will be more "alerted to the existence of this condition" while boosting the possibility that "people who suffer from these conditions can get appropriate help".

Several new chapters appear in the first update of WHO's International Classification of Diseases catalogue since the 1990s, including the one on sexual health.

Ukie, the Association for UK Interactive Entertainment, created a "gaming disorder" FAQ about the proposed inclusion, including details about what the ICD-11 list is, their concerns for classifying "gaming disorder" alongside other disorders such as alcohol, drugs and gambling, and an Open Debate paper by 36 global mental health experts, social scientists and academic scholars opposing the inclusion due to lack of scientific study. "Increased frequency and intensity" of gaming has been cited as a predominant attribute of the disorder.

The agency described the addiction as a "pattern of persistent or recurrent gaming behaviour" that becomes so extensive it "takes precedence over other life interests". If you are a video game enthusiast or at least know others that love to spend hours playing games you might be interested in the three major diagnostic features or characteristics of gaming disorder.

It is not yet clear exactly when treatment for the mental health condition will be available on the NHS.

The classification was also lambasted on social media, with users linking the concern about gaming addiction more to moral panic than solid evidence.

Deandre Ayton inks historic Puma endorsement deal
The news comes at a busy time for Jay-Z, who is now in the middle of his " On The Run II " tour with his superstar wife Beyonce . Puma last signed Vince Carter in 1998 to a 10-year deal, although the short-lived contract ended after just two seasons.

"The new catalogue, which still needs to be approved by United Nations member countries, so-called "gender incongruence" is now listed under "conditions related to sexual health", instead of "mental, behavioural and neurodevelopmental disorders".

The proposed disorder falls under the category of substance abuse or addictive behaviors, which reads: "Disorders due to substance use and addictive behaviours are mental and behavioural disorders that develop as a result of the use of predominantly psychoactive substances, including medications, or specific repetitive rewarding and reinforcing behaviours". "Even when the negative consequences occur, this behavior continues or escalates".

It is believed that between 1% and 6% of young people are addicted to video games.

Griffiths said playing video games, for the vast majority of people, is more about entertainment and novelty, citing the overwhelming popularity of games like "Pokemon Go".

The games industry is not hugely pleased by the recognition of gaming disorder. The ICD provides data on the causes of thousands of diseases, injuries and deaths across the globe and information on prevention and treatment.
