  • Jacinda Ardern's last week of work as PM ahead of taking leave was conducted from Auckland within driving distance

New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern has given birth to a girl at Auckland City Hospital.

One of the first elected leaders to have a baby while in office is Benazir Bhutto, who gave birth to a daughter in 1990 while serving as Pakistan's Prime Minister.

The news of the birth of Jacinda Ardern and Clarke Gayford's baby has made news around the world.

'Thank you so much for your best wishes and your kindness.

The yet-unnamed baby was born in Auckland Hospital at 4:45pm, today, 21 June.

The former prime minister said attitudes had changed since she'd entered politics and that was a good thing.

Former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd tweeted: "The whole world is wishing you well".

Ardern became the leader of New Zealand's Labour Party in September 2017, and was elected prime minister a few weeks later.

Many are eager to see how Ardern - who has joked about installing baby seats in her government cars -represents working mothers when she returns to the job.

WHO Says Addiction To Video Games Qualifies As Mental Health Condition
Part of the problem is how to distinguish between simply spending a lot of time playing games and actual addictive behaviour. This move has surprised some, while others said it's about time we recognize the addictive nature of video games.

Ardern's pregnancy has been global news since it was first announced on 19 January, shortly after she won office, with the Labour Party leader vowing to be "Prime Minister and a mum".

"I think it's fair to say that this will be a wee one that a village will raise, but we couldn't be more excited", she added.

When she went into labor at 5:50 a.m., she handed off her duties to New Zealand's Deputy Prime Minister, Winston Peters.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern addresses Parliament in May in Wellington, New Zealand.

It was widely reported back then while Bhutto's delivery was received positively by most Pakistanis, the country's opposition leaders criticised her heavily for having a second child.

Marie Ardern said she was not surprised her niece had given birth to a girl. Ms Ardern has said she would want to be involved with anything relating to Labour Party ministers.

"This is a sign of our maturity as a country and its acceptance that combining career and family is a choice which women are free to make", she wrote.

At the conference, Ardern was asked how choosing a baby name was going and she responded "terribly" before asking the gathered media for suggestions.

Her plans for a family had sparked a sexism row during the election when a television host quizzed her on the issue, saying voters had a right to know before they cast their ballots.
