  • An illustration of Mars against the blackness of space

Here's what Nasa said about Mars going into opposition: "Like all the planets in our solar system, Earth and Mars orbit the sun". It also makes it easier to see with telescope or the naked eye.

The two planets will come closer to each other in their orbits around the sun due to a phenomenon, which is known as "perihelic opposition".

"Since Mars and the Sun appear on opposite sides of the sky, we say that Mars is in "opposition"," NASA explained. The most recent Mars Close Approach, in 2003, was the closest the planet had been in almost 60,000 years, at 34.9 million miles away.

The 2003 opposition was the closest approach in nearly 60,000 years, it added.

In case you're wondering how a robot without a selfie stick can do this, it's actually been assembled by visual artist Sean Doran, from 100 separate NASA shots.

However, this summer will be the time to look at Mars until over 17 years from now.

"2017 was one of the off-years, but, in 2018, we'll have a grand view of Mars - best since 2003". This will happen because the planet will get really close to Earth and it is the first time it reaches this distance ever since 2003.

Blink 182 drummer Travis Barker, who had worked with the rapper, tweeted: '#RIPXXXTentacion loved collaborating with you. He died at the hospital, while another unidentified victim was in stable condition.

Aside from its photogenic prowess, the Curiosity rover made global headlines earlier this month when NASA announced that it had found organic molecules on Mars, providing fresh insight into the Red Planet.

The distance between Earth and Mars varies widely every year based on the distance between the other adjacent planets. "From our perspective on our spinning world, Mars rises in the east just as the sun sets in the west".

Why The Minimum Distance Between Mars And Earth Keeps Changing?

Is this "skull" evidence there was once life on mars? Then, after staying up in the sky the entire night, Mars sets in the west just as the sun rises in the east.

Last month, Jupiter was in opposition to our planet, swinging within 658 million km of Earth.

Ms Byrd added: "Bottom line: Mars alternates years in appearing bright and faint in our night sky".

Curiosity has captured a breathtaking selfie from the surface of the Red Planet.
