WHO Says Addiction To Video Games Qualifies As Mental Health Condition

"The rationale being that while evidence is now clear that it is not a mental disorder, and indeed classifying it in this can cause enormous stigma for people who are transgender, there remain significant health care needs that can best be met if the condition is coded under the ICD".
According to World Health Organization, there are three major criteria for the diagnosis of gaming disorder: Gaming takes precedence over other activities so much that a person often stops doing other things, a person continues gaming even when it causes issues in their life or they feel that they can't stop, and gaming causes significant distress and impairments in a person's relationships with others, as well as their work or school life.
World Health Organization officials say statistics, mainly from East and South Asian countries, show only a very small two to three percent of people are addicted to Gaming.
This move has surprised some, while others said it's about time we recognize the addictive nature of video games.
The games industry raked in US$108 billion (RM432 billion) worldwide past year, more than double movie box-office receipts, said Superdata, which tracks the games and interactive media sector.
"People need to understand this doesn't mean every child who spends hours in their room playing games is an addict, otherwise medics are going to be flooded with requests for help", Harvey clarifies.
Put simply, the idea here is that if gaming is taking over someone's life it's probably a bad thing.
"The pattern of gaming behaviour may be continuous or episodic and recurrent", reads the WHO's classification of gaming disorder.
"Nonetheless, gaming disorder can be very harmful and not something people can easily get over on their own, but with the right treatment they can". Some national surveys suggest that gaming-related disorders affect as much as 15% of young people in Asian countries and 10% in Western countries.
Part of the problem is how to distinguish between simply spending a lot of time playing games and actual addictive behaviour.
