Roger Federer 'Relieved' After Regaining No. 1 Ranking From Rafael Nadal

The Swiss ace, who was presented with a plaque by tournament director Edwin Weindorfer after the win, was understandably pleased as he reflected on his achievement and another tough match with Kyrgios that resulted in a tie-break once again.

Raonic's ranking has slipped to No. 35 as he has battled injuries over the last few seasons, but the 27-year-old from Thornhill, Ont., appears to be back in top form at the grass-court event.

Federer now faces Milos Raonic in the final. Federer was away from Clay Court for the second consecutive year.

"I am very happy and very relieved", Federer said. "Of course I'm so happy to have won here, finally, in Stuttgart".

"I tried to make it hard and I don't want any day to be easy for anybody", Raonic said.

"I hope I can keep up".

Federer was pushed all the way by the fourth-seeded Kyrgios, who had 23 aces.

Donald Trump announces tariffs on US$50 billion of Chinese goods
The administration, in addition, could impose additional tariffs if China engages in retaliatory measures, the White House said . China responded by imposing $3 billion worth of tariffs on USA exports of steel, aluminum and more than 100 other products.

Federer, also marking his return from three months off, is assured of reclaiming the No. 1 ranking from Rafael Nadal on Monday.

The third set was tight all the way into the tiebreaker, with Federer erasing a 3-1 deficit. "We've played so many breakers already, I'm losing count", Federer told the ATP website.

Federer improved to 21-2 on the season after playing in the 24th grass final of his career.

But the 12-month rolling calendar of points means that Federer must win the Halle Open just as he did previous year to retain his slim lead over Nadal.

In the other semi-final, Raonic beat defending champion Lucas Pouille 6-4 7-6 (3) to reach his first final since 2017 Istanbul Open.

"It has never been easy, even before last match point I thought I had lost the last couple of matches here before match point", Federer explained. Raonic has not dropped serve in the tournament and he will need to continue to serve that well and impose his will by moving Federer side to side from the baseline using his forehand.

However, Nadal's decision not to play before Wimbledon combined with Federer's victory in the Stuttgart Open final against Milos Raonic on Sunday saw the great rivals swap places and the Swiss once again on top of the world.
