England v Australia 3rd ODI 2018 - Highlights

20 June, 2018, 17:50 | Author: Candice Daniels
  • Alex Hales

Centuries from Jonny Bairstow (139) and Alex Hales (147), plus a 21-ball half-century from Eoin Morgan helped them eclipse the 444/3 they scored at the same venue against Pakistan two years ago.

England won their 2nd ODI series on the trot against Australia but defending the visitors by a huge 242-run margin after they posted a record total batting first.

Morgan became England's leading run-scorer in his 30-ball 67 runs.

The crushing victory was England's third in the ODI series and means they have an unassailable lead with two games to spare.

Tuesday's defeat was Australia's heaviest defeat at this level, in terms of runs, surpassing a 206-run loss to New Zealand in Adelaide in 1986, reported PTI.

England, then, are three up with two to play and pushing to complete their first ever 5-0 one-day whitewash of the old enemy to follow their 4-1 success in Australia last winter while retaining their status as the No1-ranked side in the world at Durham on Wednesday and Manchester on Sunday.

Eoin Morgan's men were in a similar position during the ODI series in Australia this winter, of course.

Salah still appears in discomfort ahead of Russian Federation game
The Liverpool star did not feature in Egypt's opening World Cup match, which ended in a 1-0 defeat to Uruguay. Mohamed Salah was Egypt's top scorer in qualifying with five goals in five appearances.

England spinners Adil Rashid (four for 47) and Moeen Ali (three for 28), with a mountain of runs behind them, shared seven wickets.

The brutal onslaught which proved to be a worthy entertainer for the fans present at the Trent Bridge was initiated by the England opening pair of Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow who set the tone for a massive total with a mammoth 159 runs stand for the opening wicket.

Bairstow had two scares, overturning an lbw verdict on 27 sweeping at Ashton Agar and escaping a very hard chance to Marcus Stoinis at deep mid-off three runs later off Andrew Tye, but he powered on to a 69-ball century.

The carnage was still on with Alex Hales joining Bairstow. Mick Lewis conceded 113 runs against South Africa in the 2006 Johannesburg ODI.

"That was extraordinary, some of the best striking I've seen, to be honest, so you've got to take your hat off to the England boys", said Australia captain Tim Paine.

"As good as the wicket was, to score 481, we saw a batting masterclass there from Bairstow, Roy and Hales", the former Australia captain told Sky Sports Cricket.

"The sky's the limit with these guys", Morgan added after England, the 2019 World Cup hosts, cemented their place at the top of the ODI rankings in style.
