  • At least 5 die when SUV crashes during chase

It may turn out that they were, but for now all we know is that authorities believed they were illegal immigrants.

"When you exempt a group of people from the law ... that creates a draw", said Manuel Padilla, the Border Patrol's chief agent there.

U.S. Border Patrol agents stopped three vehicles for an immigration inspection - a 2013 Tahoe, a 2007 Suburban, and a 2008 Tahoe - as the vehicles traveled in a convoy between El Indio and Carrizo Springs, Texas. It was estimated to be traveling around 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash.

Border Patrol operations chief Brian Hastings said among the reasons the administration has argued to separate children from their parents was concern that child smugglers were pretending to be the parents. In Sunday's crash, Boyd said the driver of the SUV survived and was taken into custody.

Four were pronounced dead at the scene midday Sunday. ProPublica said it was recorded by a person who declined to be identified for fear of retaliation, handed to a long-time civil rights attorney in Texas, who then passed it to the news organization.

Fourteen people were inside, including the driver and passenger.

Some injured were taken by helicopter to San Antonio, about 90 miles (144.83 kilometers) northeast.

Seth MacFarlane Donates to NPR, KPCC After Slamming Fox News
Fox News and its entertainment divisions may be operated by separate companies in the future. Wendy Molyneux, a writer for the animated Fox comedy Bob's Burgers voiced the same sentiment.

"If it can be built, then I think it should be built, but along with that, I think there needs to be cameras", Boyd said.

Boyd says this crash is why America needs a more secure border and why a building a wall is essential.

"This, I think, is a flawless example, of why are borders need to be secured", Boyd said. There needs to be sensors'. Department of Homeland Security officials said that at least 2,000 children have been separated from their parents since it began implementing the policy in late April.

The public is getting its first look at what the conditions are like inside an old warehouse in South Texas where the U.S. Border Patrol holds families arrested at the border with Mexico. "If a parent left a child in a cage with no supervision with other 5-year-olds, they'd be held accountable".

As a result of enforcing that policy, families who cross illegally have been separated from their children because those accompanying the children are put into the criminal justice system.

That outlook is shared by Attorney General Jeff Sessions and the president.

Trump is standing by his decision, and Republicans have previously denied ownership of this separation policy.
