Trump's former campaign chair Manafort sent to jail

  • Former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort is going to jail

"I can not turn a blind eye to this allegation", US District Judge Amy Jackson said. "I can't take away his cellphone", [the judge] said.

"[Manafort] is a guy who is tampering with witnesses in his own case", he said, adding that the former partner at Black, Manafort & Stone embodies "sleaze, corruption and the worst kind of stuff". The Washington Post reported Wednesday that Mueller continues to scrutinize Cohen, even after referring an investigation of Cohen's business practices to federal prosecutors in NY.

Manafort was taken into custody immediately after the judge's decision - a development some observers believe will increase the pressure on him to cooperate in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian meddling in the 2016 election and of related matters.

While other members of Mr Trump's orbit in Mr Mueller's spotlight have admitted guilt to lesser charges, Mr Manafort is one of the few holdouts. "And he's looking at the rest of his life behind bars".

President Donald Trump's former campaign chairman Paul Manafort is going to jail. By the afternoon, however, he appeared to offer a lifeline, noting that his prosecution was "very unfair".

Manafort faces dozens of criminal charges in connection to work he did on behalf of Viktor Yanukovych, the former president of Ukraine and an ally of the Russian government, before he was removed from office in 2014.

That may be exactly what Mr Manafort is counting on. His trial is for lobbying is due to start in September while the tax fraud trial is due to start next month.

Trump has denounced the Mueller probe as a political "witch hunt" and denied there was any collusion with Russian Federation by members of his election campaign.

First, Manafort wasn't sentenced - he's been jailed pending trial. New charges filed last week in the case accused Donald Trump's former campaign manager of tampering with witnesses in the case pending in Washington DC, which has nothing to do with the 2016 election. "I said he shouldn't pardon anybody".

Trump ‘planning’ to call North Korea’s Kim on Sunday
A majority of Americans believe President Donald Trump's historic meeting with Kim Jong Un was a success, according to recent polls.

But Manafort worked on the campaign for a critical period in the campaign, from April to August, 2016, which included the latter critical stages of securing delegates to win the nomination, and then to the Republican convention. Richard Westling, an attorney for Manafort, rebutted that claim, asking the judge to consider additional bail conditions that would allow Manafort to remain on home confinement.

He was indicted after Federal Bureau of Investigation agents seized documents from his home in a pre-dawn raid in July past year.

Manafort's attorneys have accused prosecutors of conjuring a "sinister plot" out of "innocuous" contacts.

In fact, the government now claims, Mr. Manafort led a multimillion-dollar lobbying effort in Washington to present Mr. Yanukovych as a pro-Western leader who deserved political support, not sanctions for alleged abuses of power. "It would completely change the momentum we have right now", he said.

The witnesses worked with Manafort in organizing a group of former European officials who lobbied within the US without registering as required by law.

The communications were an "effort to influence their testimony and to otherwise hide evidence", FBI Special Agent Brock Domin wrote in a separate declaration filed to the court. Strzok, according to the OIG report, said in texts to fellow Federal Bureau of Investigation employee Lisa Page that "we'll stop" Mr. Trump's election.

Paul Manafort arrives at court on Friday.

So far, four former Trump campaign officials have been indicted by Mr Mueller.

The Virginia indictment, which will go to trial in July, will focus on fraud charges.
