"Mrs Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform", her spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham told CNN.

US First Lady Melania Trump has called for an end to the policy of separating parents and children illegally entering the country from Mexico.

The little girl is among the multitude of immigrant children who have been separated from their family as part of the Trump Administration's "zero tolerance" policy, where any adult who crosses the border illegally will face criminal prosecution.

"These children are thrust into detention centers often without an advocate or an attorney and possibly even without the presence of any adult who can speak their language".

By COLLEEN LONG, Associated Press - Nearly 2,000 minors have been separated from their families at the US border over a six-week period during a crackdown on illegal entries, according to Department of Homeland Security figures obtained by The Associated Press.

In numerous cases, the families have been reunited after the parent was released from detention.

The polls were starting to suggest that Republicans might not lose big in this November's midterm elections, but they'll turn back the other way if this keeps up - and rightly so.

Melania Trump has spoken out against her husband's border policy.

At least among Trump's hardline supporters, the response would inevitably refer back to Clinton and the email controversy. However, he did say Clinton had been "extremely careless" in her handling of classified information.

Yet, Bannon added, Trump has gained nothing from Democrats for his outreach. Democrats, Republicans, health professionals and religious organisations have called for the administration to end the policy, which has attracted widespread condemnation.

In the US asylum seekers have watched helplessly as their children have been taken away from them under Donald Trump's new zero tolerance immigration policy. He has attempted to use the plight of the children as political leverage in an upcoming battle over two immigration bills in the House, and has falsely claimed that federal law requires the separation of families trying to cross the border.

'This is an issue, and if the Democrats are serious and a lot of the Republicans are serious they'll come together, they won't just talk about the Dreamers or the wall or catch and release, it's all of the above, ' Conway said.

Among those who have professed objections to the policy is the president himself, who despite his tough rhetoric on immigration and his clear directive to show no mercy in enforcing the law, has searched publicly for someone else to blame for dividing families. Because of the policy, more adults have been jailed and more children have been shipped elsewhere.

The policy has had the effect of separating the arrested immigrants from their children.

In a tweet Saturday morning, the president bashed Democrats for obstructing a GOP immigration bill that would stop the separation of families on the border, provide protection for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients, and provide funding for a border wall.

The number of separations has jumped since early May, when Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that all migrants illegally crossing the USA border with Mexico would be arrested, regardless of whether the adults were seeking asylum. "And so he went to a zero tolerance policy", Bannon said.

Amid deep divisions, congressional Republicans have struggled to craft a viable immigration plan.
