The cereal has been linked to a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Mbandaka, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

Consumers are advised by the CDC to "contact a healthcare provider if you think you got sick from consuming recalled Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal". Check your home for it and throw it away, or return it to the place of purchase for a refund.

24 people have been hospitalized.

The Food and Drug Administration is now advising consumers to throw away any Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal regardless of size or "best by if used" dates. No deaths have been reported, according to the CDC.

Illnesses began on March 3.

Also on Friday, the FDA posted a more detailed list of foreign countries where Kellogg distributed the recalled Honey Smacks cereal.

So far the outbreak has spanned 31 states with 73 cases of infection.

NY has recorded the highest number of outbreak cases (7), followed by California, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania (5 each).

Most people affected by Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after eating food contaminated by the bacteria. Other states involved have reported between one and four case of illnesses. This is part of the ongoing investigation as the CDC, the FDA, state and local health officials work together in an effort to identify the source of the contamination.

Boxes of the cereal likely made their way to Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Guam, Tahiti, the Caribbean and Saipan. Most people recover without medical treatment, but young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems may experience more severe reactions that could result in death.
