Figures show about 2000 minors separated from families

President Trump's administration has been under scrutiny in recent weeks after instituting a policy that separates immigrants coming to the county illegally from their children.

President Donald Trump and his aides have insisted that laws enacted with Democratic support require family separation. If they're calling asylum, they're still going to the detention centers although the detention centers are now full.

But advocates inside the administration, most prominently Stephen Miller, Trump's senior policy adviser, never gave up on the idea. "She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart", Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's communications director, said in a statement to The Hill. Should the First Lady speak out on policy matters? When she reached the Texas border with her 11-year-old son in May, he was taken from her by border agents, she said. I appreciate the need to enforce and protect our global boundaries, but this zero-tolerance policy is cruel. He wouldn't use the term "illegal aliens" to refer to undocumented immigrants, she said, and he wouldn't "pit one group against one another in the struggle for justice".

The US separated about 1,995 children from their parents and detained them between mid-April and May 31, according to the Office of Refugee Resettlement at the Department of Health and Human Services, which is responsible for their care.

They did, however, decide to vastly expand the detention of immigrant families, opening new facilities along the border where women and young children were held for long periods while they awaited a chance to have their cases processed.

"For those seeking asylum at ports of entry, we have continued the policy from previous Administrations and will only separate if the child is in danger, there is no custodial relationship between "family" members, or if the adult has broken a law", she wrote on Twitter.

"DHS takes very seriously its duty to protect minors in our temporary custody from gangs, traffickers, criminals and abuse".

"Trump claims Democrats are to blame for families' being broken up", said one of the Democrats, Bill Pascrell jnr.

"What the administration has chose to do is to separate children from their parents to try to send a message that if you cross the border with children, your children are going to be ripped away from you", Senator Susan Collins told CBS television's "Face the Nation". "That is traumatizing to children who are innocent victims".

Dimmit County Sheriff Marion Boyd says the SUV lost control while travelling at more than 160 kilometres per hour and overturned on a Texas highway. "But the elites in this city, and this ties into Korea, ties into everything that took place this week, the elites, the permanent political class in this city want to manage situations to un - you know, to bad outcomes", Bannon told ABC News.

Rep. Beto O'Rourke, a Democrat from Texas, said he was working on legislation that would end the practice of family separation.

"They call it 'zero tolerance, ' but a better name for it is zero humanity, and there's zero logic to this policy", said Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon. Not only could they not pick up or touch the children; they could not get their parents for them.

"Hurting kids to get legislative leverage is unacceptable, it is evil".

"The president is not telling the truth".

Earlier, Representative David Cicilline said the policy was "undermining the founding values of this country". "It's a disgrace, it's shameful and it's un-American", he added.

Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives will introduce legislation this week aimed at stopping separations, mirroring a similar Senate bill sponsored by Democrat Dianne Feinstein.

"These children should not be a negotiating tool".

Almost 2,000 immigrant children were separated from their parents during six weeks in April and May, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
