"By making upskirting a specic offence, we are sending a clear message that it will not be tolerated".

David Gauke, the Justice Secretary who collaborated with Ms Martin over her campaign, echoed the dismay within the Conservatives.

"Upskirting is an invasion of privacy which leaves victims feeling degraded and distressed", Ms May said on Twitter.

Wera Hobhouse, the Lib Dem MP who introduced the Bill after lobbying Sir Christopher on the back benches in the moments before he delivered the crushing blow, said she was angry, frustrated and disappointed.

It means the Bill will have to return for another Friday Private Members Bill session, on July 6, if it is to have any hope of becoming law this Parliamentary term.

Martin was upskirted in 2017, but was unable to prosecute after police deemed the image not obscene enough because she was wearing underwear.

Katie Ghose, chief executive of charity Women's Aid, told PA: "We welcome the government taking decisive action to make upskirting a criminal offense".

The U.K. government had endorsed the legislation earlier Friday to ban "upskirting" photos, but the process was stalled by one Conservative lawmaker.

Companies don't want to invest into uncertain climates, and when business investment stalls, so does job creation. For that reason, Katsoras still believes that Trump won't pull the trigger and cancel NAFTA.

Asked why he had recently been knighted, the prime minister said: "Christopher Chope has been a longstanding member of parliament".

Martin's next step is to meet with Tory MP Lucy Frazer, along with Hobhouse and her lawyer Ryan Whelan to plan their next steps.

"We knew this was a risk - but now I stand with powerful, passionate, women and men behind me, and I am committed to ..." He insisted that he is not a "pervert" or a "dinosaur" but objected to the Bill progressing because he feels it is important for MPs to debate issues fully.

A plan by the United Kingdom parliament to ban taking photos up women's skirts without their permission was blocked at the last minute by one Conservative lawmaker who refused to support the law.

Victims of upskirting have been found to be as young as 10 years old.

"Don't underestimate just how furious many Tory MPs are about this", tweeted Paul Masterton, a new MP who is 39 years Sir Christopher's junior.

A United Kingdom lawmaker has blocked a bid to criminalize upskirting, the practice of filming up people's clothing to see their genitals or underwear, just hours after the government announced its support for the measure.

The PM said she was "disappointed" the bill had failed to progress.
