  • There are two available options to assist the families of fallen Wyandotte County Sheriff's deputies Patrick Rohrer and Theresa King

Investigators said the inmate may have grabbed a weapon from one of the deputies during a struggle after he got out of a van late Friday morning. "They did it each and every day that they stepped out into the community", he said.

Police say the deputies were transporting inmates to the courthouse for a court hearing when they were "overcome" in the parking lot of the gated transport office.

Rohrer, 35, was with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office for 17 years and King, 44, was a 14-year veteran. The deputies were taken to the University of Kansas Hospital, where both died of their wounds.

FOX4 Kansas City identified the suspect as Antoine Fielder, 22, who had been tried twice for the murder of a 22-year-old that both ended in hung juries. His is also awaiting trial for a 2017 murder. Rohrer, 35, had been with the department for seven years.

After King's passing, the Kansas City Police posted to Facebook, saying, "We continue to pray for our brothers and sister with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Department as we lose our sister this morning".

CNN will air remaining ‘Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown’ episodes
Bourdain, 61, took his own life last week in France while working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series. The network confirmed Bourdain's death on Friday in a statement to Us, honoring his "love of great adventure".

The death of Rohrer and King follows three other shootings of Wyandotte County law enforcement officers in the past three years, according to the Star.

Bailiff said the investigation is now being handled by the police department in Kansas City.

"It seems like Wyandotte County has really been hit hard recently", she said.

Bailiff said a credit union fund will be set up soon for people to donate to help the families of the slain deputies, and that information will be provided publicly later.

A candlelight vigil for the deputies was set to be held at 8pm on Sunday, in front of city hall. Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says inmate transfer situations carry an inherent danger.
