  • Roger Federer celebrated his return to the top of the world rankings by winning the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart

Pouille fended off the Canadian's effort as much as possible during the match, including saving two break point opportunities from Raonic.

Roger Federer will be back as world number one in the new rankings next week after coming from behind to beat Nick Kyrgios 6-7 (2) 6-2 7-6 (5) in the semi-finals of the ATP Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart.

Raonic, on the other hand, had 19 aces and saved the only break point he faced.

"It's great to be back, healthy and in the final in Stuttgart", Raonic said on Twitter.

Though Rafael Nadal - who he will replace at the top of the rankings on Monday - withdrew from Queen's, Federer would still lose the No. 1 spot if he fails to defend his title in Halle.

But speaking to Swiss newspaper Blick, Federer said any decision to stop playing will centre on his family as he revealed his regrets at being away from them for training sessions.

Milos played rock solid tennis this week, advancing into his first final since Istanbul last year but it wasn't enough to go all the way, losing serve once in the opening set and falling in the second set tie break to miss a chance of winning the first title in two and a half years.

"But I [will] stop when I feel that my tournament life is no longer good for the family".

It was Raonic who memorably left Federer on the Centre Court floor on his way to the 2016 Wimbledon final, but the 36-year-old was in no mood to allow a repeat.

"So I'm very happy with myself and I hope I can continue to improve my level again tomorrow".

The 27-year-old now holds the No. 35 position in the world rankings.

"Reaching the final is an important step for me", he said. I've created some opportunities, I haven't always made the majority but I'm keeping pressure on my opponents there.
