  • Frustrated Mickelson swats moving ball with putter at Open

Mickelson, who has been a U.S. Open runner-up six times, most recently in 2013, was having a miserable time Saturday before reaching 13. He was on the 13th hole and was putting down a steep slope, then hit his first putt way too hard, sending the ball tumbling down past the hole and seemingly headed off the green. In the final round that year, Daly hit a moving ball on the green as it was rolling back toward him following a putt that didn't quite make it up the hill. Instead of letting his ball come to rest, Mickelson smacked it back toward the hole, taking a two-stroke penalty. The FOX broadcasters speculated that it was a move out of pure frustration and defeat. I took the two-shot penalty and moved on.

"I said that's one of the strangest things I've ever seen and then just started laughing, to be honest". "He's putted bad enough that I think he just snapped at how bad his speed was on that putt".

Mickelson later said he did not mean the shot to be disrespectful, saying there was "no question" the ball was going to roll off the green, and he chose to take the penalty rather than the alternative. I wasn't going to have a shot.

John Bodenhamer of the US Golf Association said Mickelson was penalized two strokes for violating rule 14-5 by "making a stroke at a moving ball".

U.S. drone strike kills leader of Pakistani Taliban, Pakistan says
In his Eid day message, Taliban leader Hibatullah Akhundzada called for direct talks with the US , bypassing the Kabul government. Fazlullah emerged as the leader of the Taliban in the Swat Valley more than a decade ago.

I don't mean any disrespect. He was crucified for hitting the ball while it was moving, but he might have made the smart play. "It's just one of them things that just happened".

Regardless of his play, Mickelson said he enjoyed his time at Shinnecock. "I've had an awesome day".

The fans were eagerly awaiting their beloved Lefty's arrival, to serenade him for his birthday. It's been- you know, singing "Happy Birthday", wishing happy birthdays, the people here have made coming here over the decades an awesome experience. But ultimately, Mickelson carded a sextuple bogey - eight actual strokes at the ball, plus two extra for the penalty.

The adventure took place on the par-4 13th.
