  • Relay For Life gives people a chance to reflect and show their support

Nurse Nancy Harmon, in wheelchair, is joined by her friends and family members for the Survivors Lap that kicks off the event.

And Luers says in 2016, she was diagnosed with uterus cancer.

As the New Richmond Relay for Life event celebrated 25 years Friday, June 8 into Saturday, June 9 at the New Richmond Middle School track, there were tears, smiles, hope, inspiration, courage and memorable moments all wrapped into one night. For her, watching over her many family members who struggled with cancer never felt like a chore. Just recently her sister was diagnosed. Ronaldo nets hat trick for Portugal in thrilling draw with Spain

"I had it twice, and I come here today not only for myself, but for many in our family that have had cancer, and some that have passed away with it, and some that are just learning they're going to have cancer", Turbin said. Because people don't understand, but you don't really understand unless you're really part of it.

She said caregiving can feel helpless sometimes, but it's an important part of what defeats cancer. "Relay is one way to fight back".

She said another huge resource is the American Cancer Society, which receives the proceeds from the Franklin County Relay For Life. The society works to provide for those who need assistance while fighting cancer and research cures. Participants will circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the name of someone who has battled cancer.

In 2017, the Rutland event raised about $230,000 and Vitagliano said this year's goal is $260,000. "But here we can al lean on each other", said Getz.
