US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met and shook hands here today and held their history-making summit aimed at normalising bilateral ties and complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula.

During the signing ceremony, the two leaders sat side by side at an expansive wooden table decorated with white flowers and were flanked on either side by American and North Korean flags, The new Straits Times reported.

"Today we had a historic meeting and made a decision to leave the past behind", the North Korean leader said. Trump increasingly hit back with his own rhetoric since taking office a year ago.

It also made no mention of the global sanctions that have crippled North Korea's economy, for pursuing its nuclear weapons program.

The United States and DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and North Korean officials will hold follow-up negotiations "at the earliest possible date", the statement said.

"It's a great honor to be with you, and I know we'll have tremendous success together", Trump said at the start of a second meeting, which featured the two leaders and their aides.

Both Trump and Kim expressed gratitude toward each other for the meetings, and Trump said he would "absolutely" invite Kim to visit the White House.

The extent to which Kim might be willing to do away with his treasured nuclear armoury remains to be seen, but the signs from the last fortnight at least have been positive.

Neither Trump nor Kim provided details on their agreement following several hours of meetings centered around the denuclearisation of North Korea.

The talk is conducting at a resort island of Sentosa in Singapore. We're going to take care of a very big and risky problem for the rest of the world.

Kim reaffirmed that he would "work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula", though there was no indication the two men had agreed on what that would mean. "We're going to have a great discussion and will be tremendously successful".

President Donald Trump is defending his repeated praise of North Korea's Kim Jong Un during their meetings in spite of Kim's distressing record on human rights.

The President walked over to the huge armored Cadillac - which has a wealth of top secret features - with Kim by his side after they finished bipartisan talks and a working lunch. Trump described the meeting as "really fantastic".

Rodman grew emotional in the interview as he recalled former president Barack Obama failing to take him seriously when he returned from Pyongyang with a message from Mr Kim after one of his trips.
