Canada's House of Commons has unanimously condemned personal attacks on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by US President Donald Trump and his aides as the famously polite nation simmered over the weekend broadsides by its US ally. On Saturday, he called the Canadian prime minister "very dishonest and weak".

A number of G-7 officials had tried to brush aside Trump's comments during the Quebec summit, suggesting he was trying to show bravado ahead of his talks with the North Korean leader.

Rep. Trent Kelly thinks the relationship between the USA and Canada remains strong and that the countries will work out their differences. And Finance Minister Bill Morneau is also planning to meet with his American counterpart, Steve Mnuchin, in Washington this week as well.

"Justin acts hurt when called out!" the United States president said in his latest Tweet.

Navarro slammed Trudeau's comment as "one of the worst political miscalculations by a Canadian leader in modern Canadian history".

On Saturday morning, Canadian officials had also expressed a modest new feeling of optimism about talks on the North American free-trade agreement, and that that might be a way of getting an exemption to new US tariffs on steel and aluminum.

"In conveying that message I used language that was inappropriate and basically lost the power of that message", Navarro said at a Tuesday conference in Washington hosted by the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg reported.

Navarro was talking about Trudeau's decision to hold a press conference in which he calmly, quietly and politely - which is to say, Canadianly - explained that our neighbors to the north would be responding to the White House's imposition of aluminum and steel tariffs with tariffs of their own, something the Canadian government had said it would do all along.

In a tweet posted Saturday evening, Trump said his decision to rescind support for the statement was based on "false statements" made by Trudeau during a press conference he gave, as well as "the fact that Canada is charging massive Tariffs" on USA companies.

Trump Says Kim Jong Un Agreed To Destroy 'Major' Missile Testing Site
Trump said near the end of a lengthy press conference that he may be wrong about Kim, but he'll never admit it. So we look nice and handsome and thin? "A new world can begin today, one of friendship, respect and goodwill".

"That said, this is going to be a massive headache for U.S. companies doing business in Canada, both from a public relations and consumer relations perspective". He learned. You can't do. "You can't do that".

"I get into Air Force One, the television's on, and I see a news conference being given by the prime minister of Canada", Trump said. "And that's what bad-faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference".

Mrs May said she made clear to Mr Trump that the United States levies were unacceptable - but she underlined the need for dialogue to stop the dispute from escalating. "I don't understand the obsession with trade relations with Canada", he said on Fox's "Sunday Morning Futures", given that Canada is the biggest single buyer of American goods and services in the world. "We just shook hands!"

Theresa May has admitted a "difficult" G7 summit - marked by Donald Trump tearing up a joint agreement and lashing out at other leaders - saw "very candid discussions".

MacLauchlan also took the opportunity to affirm his support for the supply management system in Canada's dairy industry, which has been heavily attacked by members of the Trump administration.

Trump's attacks have Canadian businesses that use aluminum and steel very anxious, said Ontario Conservative MP John Brassard, who added that there is real concern that there will be serious job implications in very short order. "It's very unfair, and it's very unfair to our workers, and I'm gonna straighten it out".

The criticism was echoed by White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow, who joined Trump at the G7 meetings. It is up to the diplomats now to ameliorate the relationship between the two trading partners. One senior Trump adviser told The Atlantic's Jeffrey Goldberg that the Trump Doctrine could be summarized as "We're America, Bitch".

Trudeau had simply reiterated Canada's stated plan of imposing retaliatory dollar-for-dollar tariffs in response to the new American tariffs on imported steel and aluminum. "Our Tariffs are in response to his of 270% on dairy!" he added.
