  • Anti-U.S. consumer boycott? Canadians may find it hard to pull off

Donald Trump has left the G7 network of global cooperation in disarray after he pulled the United States out of a previously agreed summit communique, blaming the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau whom he derided as "dishonest and weak". "In conveying that message I used language that was inappropriate and basically lost the power of that message", Navarro said at a Tuesday conference in Washington hosted by the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg reported.

"I own that, that was my mistake, those were my words", he said.

Donald Trump took offence to that and called Trudeau "very dishonest and weak" on Twitter for his "false statements". "That's what bad-faith Justin Trudeau did with that stunt press conference", Navarro said.

Trump continued ranting about what he regarded as "foolish" trade practices in a series of tweets on Monday morning.

Mr Navarro said Mr Trump "did the courtesy to Justin Trudeau to travel up to Quebec for that summit".

"If Kim shakes Trump's hand and receives lavish praise from President Trump and tries to play President Trump - look what happened to Canada - bad things are going to happen", said Graham, the hawkish South Carolina Republican.

Meanwhile, a White House official says the US will seek to replace NAFTA with bilateral deals with Canada and Mexico, if the talks fail. "He'll learn, he can't do that", Trump said.

U.S. President Donald Trump speaks during a news conference after his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore June 12, 2018.

The president ruffled feathers at the G7 summit, not backing down from stiff tariffs on aluminum and steel imports. "It is a mistake that will cost him a lot of money", said trump.

Asked about the possibility that Kim could break a vague agreement with Trump to work toward denuclearization, Graham cited the current trade spat with Trudeau as evidence Trump shouldn't be crossed.

The decision to back out of the communique was "in large part" because of the upcoming North Korea summit, Kudlow said.

"I think it's a very fair question", Trump said. The US president and Mr Trudeau have had a friendly relationship in the past, but tensions over US tariffs have strained the diplomatic partnership.

Canadian officials have stressed the two countries' extensive trading relationship and pointed out that Canada is the top export destination for 35 USA states and that 9 million jobs in the United States depend on trade with its northern neighbour.
