As foreign policy analysts try to predict the next steps after President Trump's historic meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on Tuesday, they're running into a problem: the two leaders can't seem to provide a consistent account of what they agreed to in Singapore. On Wednesday morning, he took to Twitter to claim there was "no longer" a nuclear threat posed by the North Korean regime.

Kim has framed the switch as a natural next step now that he has what he stresses is a credible and viable nuclear arsenal capable of keeping the U.S.at bay.

Trump also called the war games "provocative" and "inappropriate", echoing language both Beijing and Pyongyang have used to characterise the annual war games that have been conducted for decades.
"It was a good meeting", said Yuri Kim as she stood outside the South Korean consulate in Koreatown, holding her two-year-old son in her arms.
"I don't trust Kim Jong-un, we don't trust North Korean people", he said.
In one photo on the front page, Trump was featured gesturing the way forward for Kim Jong Un, while four of the eight photos on the front page featured them shaking hands. He met for almost an hour with Gen. Vincent Brooks, commander of U.S. Forces Korea, at the air base before heading by motorcade to Seoul. But South Korean President Moon Jae-in played a key role in opening the dialogue and getting things back on track after Trump cancelled the meeting last month.
On the issue the world has been most fixated on - North Korea's pursuit of a nuclear arsenal meant to target the entire USA mainland - Trump and Kim signed a joint statement that contained a repeat of past vows to work toward a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.
Kim at one point told Trump that many people around the world would see their meeting as a kind of fantasy, as if it the event was a "science fiction movie".

Despite the confusion and disappointment among some, the summit managed to, for a time at least, reset a relationship that has always been characterised by bloodshed and threats.

China won big at the summit after Trump made surprising pledges to suspend war games with South Korea and eventually pull US troops from there. But Lu Chao, an expert on North Korea at the Liaoning Academy of Social Sciences in northeast China's Shenyang city, says the guarantees are probably "a repeat of previous USA statements that it does not seek to overthrow the current regime in North Korea".
But he said that was no longer the case, and everyone can "sleep well tonight".
After the whirlwind trip, Trump eagerly boasted, "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea".
Trump also said the U.S. would halt military exercises with Seoul - something long sought by Pyongyang, which claims the drills are a rehearsal for invasion.
"We don't know what type of person the North Korean leader is negotiating with". Trump's decision to meet Kim without that clear path to denuclearization removed the roadblock.
Former U.S. ambassador Bill Richardson told VOA he is concerned about no verification of what the North Koreans will do about missile technology in the DPRK, no detail of nuclear reduction, the peace treaty and human rights.
Highlighting the continued differences in the two countries' views of the denuclearization process, the report also said that they had agreed on a "step-by-step" approach.
A report in North Korea's Rodong Sinmun newspaper, another state-run outlet, claimed on Wednesday that the USA agreed to offer rewards as North Korea moved toward ridding itself of nukes.
