  • California to vote on whether to split into three states

A measure to split California into three separate states has been added to the November ballot.

The measure backed by Tim Draper has hit almost 420,000 valid or projected to be valid signatures in the random sample, topping the 365,000 needed to qualify for the November ballot.

Said Peggy Grande of Citizens for Cal 3, the campaign on behalf of the initiative: "The California state government isn't too big to fail, because it is already failing its citizens in so many crucial ways".

California: This will be considered the new state which includes Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Monterey and San Benito counties.

The bottom portion of the state, which would include San Diego and the eastern part of the state with Fresno, would become Southern California, according to a map by the Times.

What's more, Congress is unlikely to want to create four new U.S. Senators, two for each of the additional Californias, which could shake up the electoral college in future presidential elections.

The ballot initiative would designate three states.

According to a letter from the state's Legislative Analyst's Office, the new states will face income disparities, in addition to "virtually certain" court challenges that could take years to resolve.

Any effort to break up the state would still have to receive Congressional approval.

Not many Californians are on board thus far, however.

"California government has rotted", Draper told The Mercury News last month.

"Three states will get us better infrastructure, better education and lower taxes", Draper told The Los Angeles Times last summer after his proposal for the measure was submitted.

With slightly more than 39 million people, California is the most populous state in the nation.

Even if California voters supported the proposal in November, the California legislature would still have to vote in favor of it.

"Splitting California into three new states will triple the amount of special interests, lobbyists, politicians and bureaucracy".
