Woods has been out of golf for most of the past two years and his world ranking fell out of the top 1,000.

Tiger Woods will tee it up in his first US Open golf tournament since 2015 alongside world No 1 Justin Thomas and the man Thomas replaced atop the summit, Dustin Johnson.

Trains began stopping at the Shinnecock Hills station on Thursday, to allow those wishing to visit the U.S. Open merchandise tent to get a head start before the tournament.

Woods, 42, has won 14 major championships, however, he has not won a major event since the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines but has been back in good form in recent months after recovering from a back problem.

On the other side of the draw, the group of Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Phil Mickelson will tee off at 8.02 AM local time on Thursday. Woods, Johnson and Thomas are together in the afternoon.

Those in attendance looking to track the progress of defending champion Brooks Koepka will get to see him play alongside two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson and former world number one and 2015 USPGA victor Jason Day.

Brooks Koepka, an impressive four-shot victor at Erin Hills previous year, will begin the defence of his title alongside two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson and former world No 1 Jason Day.

Seven of the world's 10 top-ranked players are in the same half of the draw, with Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama also playing early Thursday/late Friday.
