Man arrested over deadly Japan stabbing spree

Police arrested the suspect as the train stopped at Odawara Station, south of Tokyo.

The three people were sent to the hospital, but 38-year-old corporate employee Kotaro Umeda from Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, died.

The other two victims are women in their 20s, and suffered from injuries to their heads and shoulders, among other areas, the Sankei Shimbun said, adding that their conditions have stabilised.

The offender was detained by the police.

Kojima was holding a knife when police seized him at the station.

In June 2015, a 71-year-old man committed suicide by self-immolation on a westbound Nozomi train, setting himself ablaze while it was on the same Shin-Yokohama-Odawara segment.

The stabbing took place at 10 p.m. local time (1300 GMT) and caused panic on the train carrying some 800 passengers as it traveled from Tokyo to Osaka.
