Although gaps remain over what denuclearisation would entail, Trump sounded a positive note in a lunch meeting with Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

"North Korea has previously confirmed to us its willingness to denuclearize, and we are eager to see if those words prove honest", Pompeo said.

Trump spoke only briefly in public on Monday, forecasting a "nice" outcome.

Trump and Kim will start their historic summit with a one-on-one session with translators.

The KCNA news agency said the two leaders will exchange "wide-ranging and profound views" during their meeting at the five-star Capella Hotel on Sentosa Island. The official was not authorized to speak publicly about internal deliberations and insisted on anonymity.

He has also convinced the North Korean people that nuclear weapons are their only savior from an invasion by the U.S. But Kim, who was educated in Switzerland, has also promised to transform North Korea's economy and the lives of its people.

Last year, it would have been a rare sight to see a North Korean flag flying anywhere in Asia.

Singapore, the host country of the upcoming U.S.

He declined, however, to reveal any details of the preliminary discussions being held Monday between US and North Korean officials.

The White House said later that discussions with North Korea had moved "more quickly than expected" and Trump would leave Singapore on Tuesday night after the summit, rather than Wednesday, as scheduled earlier.

The North Korean leader has also said he now wants to focus on building the country's economy - and wants sanctions relief and global investment.

Despite the optimism, it's unclear whether the gap between the United States and North Korea over what denuclearization means has been bridged.

Part of the interest in Tuesday's summit is simply because Kim has had limited appearances on the world stage.

Kim is also en route to Sentosa Island for the meeting to discuss the fate of his country's nuclear weapons arsenal.

Even so, the summit continues to be a highly sensitive topic in North Korea and it is hard - even more so than usual - to get people to express their opinions about it. China and South Korea would have to sign off on any legal treaty.

Trump advisers cast his actions as a show of strength before the Kim meeting.

He said about half of the cost is for security.

Laboriously negotiated past nuclear deals, considered breakthroughs at the time, broke down on North Korea's extreme sensitivity to allowing in outsiders to look at whether they're dismantling their nuclear facilities, many of which are thought to be hidden.

Rodman is one of a handful of Westerners to have visited reclusive North Korea and met Kim.

He accompanied the young leader at all four of his recent summits, twice with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and twice with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

It's so far unclear whether the US and North Korea will release some kind of joint statement or agreement following the sit-down.
