  • Scientists Discover New Planet'EPIC 211945201 600 Light Years Away at Mount Abu Observatory

A team of Indian scientists, under the guidance of Prof Abhijit Chakraborty of Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), Ahmedabad, has found an exoplanet. ISRO has issued a detailed report on this discovery.

The found planet is reportedly a sub-Saturn or super-Neptune-sized planet which has a radius six times that of earth, ISRO stated in its announcement on Friday. It is closer to Neptune, he added.

While the heat on the planet makes it uninhabitable, its discovery is important to help understand "the formation mechanism of such super-Neptune or sub-Saturn kind of planets that are too close to the host star". Hence the planet will be known as EPIC 211945201b or K2-236b.

They spent a year a half at PRL's Gurushikhar Observatory in Mount Abu, India, studying the changes in light coming from the planet's host star, EPIC 211945201 or K2-236, and performing an independent confirmation of its mass. The surface temperature of the planet was recorded around 600 degree Celsius due to its close proximity to the host star.

This latest planet was also first spotted and listed as a candidate planet by Kepler, but it was a team of Indian scientists that confirmed it was a planet, rather than simply a comet or another astronomical object - which is the tricky part.

Hamilton feels Ferrari will 'falter' in F1 title battle
Today I think we had a couple of small lock ups, but as you continue to push the setup there are areas that can be affected. But the four-time world champion said it could have been worse. "Some of the marshals were already celebrating", he said.

There are only a handful of nations that have the capability to explore regions so far away, let alone discover entirely new planets. The total mass of these elements was calculated at about 60 to 70 percent of planet EPIC's total mass.

On the other hand, only a few such accurate and powerful spectrographs exist around the world, the majority of which being in the United States and Europe. The observations which will be done with VLT, future spectrographs in the GTC or with European Southern Observatory (ESO) is said to crucial as they determine the masses, physical properties, and densities of these planets.

According to the definition, these are the planets which orbit a star outside the solar system.

Specifically, the PARAS made it possible for the scientists to measure how planet EPIC correlates to the amplitude produced when its host star responds to its orbit.
