  • Sebastian Vettel 'surprised' by one Red Bull decision during Canadian GP qualifying

Sebastian Vettel swept to an imperious victory at the Canadian Grand Prix in a class of his own.

Before the race on Sunday, the vehicle Villeneuve used in 1978 will be driven by his 47-year-old son Jacques, the 1997 world champion, to lead the ceremonial parade lap.

Australian Daniel Ricciardo, victorious in Monaco two weeks ago, was sixth in the second Red Bull as his team-mate Verstappen, who had been fastest throughout practice, continued to deliver a ideal riposte to his critics.

At one point, it looked like we might have had a battle for the lead as Bottas cut the deficit to Vettel.

The race continued in its holding pattern, with the leading Vettel, second-placed Valtteri Bottas and Raikkonen in third preserving their tires to guarantee a one-stop strategy.

The team took some time to find its pace over the weekend with Vettel not fully at ease with the auto until qualifying when he found the set-up he wanted to deliver an impressive pole, from which he dictated the race and converted into an equally impressive win.

Vettel set the pace throughout the Q3 top 10 shootout, posting a time of 1m10.776s on his first run to take top spot. Both cars were badly damaged but the drivers escaped uninjured.

Wolfe's case led to the first known instance of the Justice Department going after a reporter's data under President Trump ". But he added, "It's clearly inappropriate for a reporter to be in a relationship with a source and to be reporting on him".

It means Hamilton is using an engine that has already completed six full races, while the majority of his rivals are are fresh units.

"There would have been gains and I think it would have been a close fight for the pole with the new engine parts, but we're going to get it later", said Bottas.

Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, the 2014 Canadian GP victor, is coming off a victory two weeks ago in Monaco.

"All round they've been doing a slightly better job so we've got to do more".

"In the race, it all calms down a bit, which is why in general we are always a bit more competitive". Kimi Raikkonen, in the second Ferrari, was sixth.

Vettel sees another chance to honour the memory of Gilles Villeneuve, who died in a crash at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, with a Ferrari win. "It's a great result for all the team, but I think I could have been even faster". Vettel said. "I brushed the wall and lost some time getting ready for the second session".

"We were briefly talking about what we wanted to do, trying to figure everything out".
