U.S. President Donald Trump had one ally in all of Europe: France and its fast-learning leader Emmanuel Macron.

Putin, whose country was expelled in 2014 from what was then the Group of Eight major industrial nations over Russia's annexation of Crimea, also suggested hosting the organization's next summit in Moscow.

The US president had earlier called for Russian Federation - which was suspended from the group in 2014, following Moscow's annexation of Crimea, and made a decision to leave permanently in 2017 - to be readmitted in the interests of realpolitik.

The U.S. leader has repeatedly said he wants to improve relationships with Moscow.

"We will be ready to greet them all in Moscow", he added, referring to leaders of the USA, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Canada and Italy.

"The U.S. efforts to impose its policies on others are expanding as a threat to all", Rouhani told the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a regional security grouping led by China and Russian Federation where Iran has observer status.

Following the end of the summit, the USA president said he would invite Italy's new PM to the White House, praising him and Italians for the March 4 elections' outcome.

Why Trump's combative trade stance toward allies poses risks
President Trump said that he expects other nations to provide fair market access to American exports. Every year, the members of the group hold a summit to discuss economic matters.

"I think it would be an asset to have Russian Federation back in", Trump said during an impromptu press conference at the summit. "They should let Russian Federation come back in because we should have Russian Federation at the negotiating table". "Please, we will be glad to see everyone here in Moscow".

Putin stressed that he is ready to meet Trump "as soon as" Washington is ready, adding that there were "no precise talks on a place for the meeting".

Speaking after the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on Sunday, Putin said: "Once again, nothing concrete was said".

"Crimea was let go during the Obama administration", Trump said Saturday, adding: "you really have to ask that question to President [Barack] Obama, you know, why did he do that?" It was the first violation of a European country's borders since World War II.

"Russia has done nothing to earn its way back to the table", Donilon also said. "I think it would be good for the world". In 2017 Russian Federation announced it would permanently leave the group.

Trump announced the USA would leave what he called the "horrible" Iran nuclear accord in May. Konstantin Kosachev, chairman of the foreign relations committee in Russia's upper house of parliament has said that the country should only rejoin the group on its terms - "with sanctions removed and interests respected". The agreement, put into place in 2015 under President Barack Obama, lifted global economic sanctions against Iran in exchange for the country to limit its nuclear program.
