US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un are set to meet in Singapore on Tuesday for a highly anticipated summit.
Perry's remarks come as Trump prepares to meet with Kim in Singapore for a historic summit that will mark the first gathering between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader.
Those points were echoed in Monday's media coverage in North Korea, which stressed that the talks with Trump would focus on forging a relationship more in tune with what was described as changing times - most likely meaning the North's new status as a nuclear-armed state - and its desire for a mechanism to ensure lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula and, finally, denuclearisation.
Pompeo, who was in Singapore, did not go into specific details about how the US would secure the country, but he said talks between the USA and North Korea are moving briskly.
Observers in the region warn that ultimatums over denuclearization could make military confrontation between the US and North Korea even more likely, a situation Zhao Hai from China's Academy of Social Sciences described as a "down-spiral of security" that could turn into a nuclear "nightmare".
He said if diplomacy fails to move in the right direction, the sanctions "will increase".
Trump while meeting Monday with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, said he thinks the upcoming meeting with Kim will "work out very nicely".
But Trump - for whom a major accomplishment would bolster his position ahead of midterm elections in November - baffled observers when he said he did not think he had to prepare "very much" for the summit.
Lobster bisque, beef tenderloin and ice cream were on the lunch menu, and there was also an early birthday cake for Trump, who turns 72 on Thursday.
"There are only two people that can make decisions of this magnitude".

Kim met with Lee on Sunday. While Trump will be a guest at the Shangri-La Hotel during his stay in the City-State, Kim will be a resident of the St Regis Hotel barely a kilometre away.
So just what will a successful meeting between Trump and Kim actually look like?
Trump, seen here arriving in Singapore, has said his goal is denuclearization of North Korea.
A report by the state-run Korean Central News Agency said the summit would feature "wide-ranging and profound talks" and was being held "under the great attention and expectation of the whole world".
Why only potentially? That's because these two world leaders are not, strictly speaking, known to be very diplomatic - that is to say that they are in no manner of speaking, known to be very diplomatic at all.
A Trump administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the US side was entering the talks with a sense of optimism and an equal dose of scepticism given North Korea's long history of developing nuclear weapons.
Later, they would be joined by their respective negotiating teams for discussions that could last another hour.
He explained that he gave the North Korean official Trump's book, "Art of the Deal", while he was in North Korea.
The talks have been portrayed by Trump in recent days more as a get-to-know-you session.
But some question why Kim should trust any guarantees given Trump's history of pulling out of accords - most recently the painstakingly negotiated Iran nuclear deal.
