It was Gayson's character who, at the card table, first asked James Bond his name.

After losing a few hands she suggests raising the stakes, to which Bond replies: 'I admire your courage, Miss, er?'

Connery then uttered his iconic line as he said: "Bond, James Bond".

Actress and first "Bond girl" Eunice Gayson has died aged 90.

A post on her official Twitter feed said she died on 8 June.

James Bond producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccolo paid tribute to Gayson on the official 007 Twitter account, saying they are "so sad" to hear she has passed away. Trench turns up again in From Russia With Love (1963), when her afternoon punting with 007 has to be curtailed when he gets a call from headquarters.

"Trench, Sylvia Trench. I admire your luck, Mr.?"

Gayson was a British actress with a long and prolific career.

A fact many people don't know is that while she appeared in the Bond films, her lines were actually recorded by voiceover artist Nikki van der Zyl. Lewis Gilbert, the director of the next film in the series - Goldfinger (1964) - had other ideas however, and kiboshed the idea.

Gayson was initially cast as Miss Moneypenny, but that role went to Lois Maxwell.

Born in 1928 in Surrey, England, Gayson made stage appearances in "Born Yesterday", "No, No Nanette", "The Sound of Music", and in British TV revues.

She also was part of the now-famous scene in which James Bond (played by Sean Connery) introduces himself.
