  • US suicide rate on rise: health agency

"Comprehensive statewide suicide prevention activities are needed to address the full range of factors contributing to suicide", the report said. In less than a decade the rate of suicides in OH has gone up 36 percent meaning an average of about 5 people a day now die from suicide in Ohio.

"I think it's possible that we have some underrecognition of mental health conditions in our data, both because conditions haven't been formally diagnosed and because those left behind might not have been aware of the diagnosis", Schuchat said.

Reidenberg understands the complexities of suicides, pointing out there are nearly always multiple causes, including mental illnesses, substance abuse, a life change such as a job loss or a break up.

The number of suicide incidents rose across different genders, ages, and races, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Even if they don't say yes, they've heard it from you, that there's someone that cares, that is concerned because then it could be that later when I'm thinking about this that maybe I'll call you", she said.

Despite an increased awareness and more help available than ever before, there is still a stigma attached to reaching out for help.

OPEC rumors from the USA drive oil prices lower
The group and Russian Federation are due to meet at its headquarters in Vienna on June 22 to discuss production policy. As interesting as all these numbers may be, the June 22 OPEC meeting is drawing the most attention right now.

That report comes on the heels of two well-known celebrities taking their lives this week.

That year, 41,149 Americans died by suicide; it claimed almost 45,000 lives in 2016, making it the 10th leading cause of death nationwide, according to the CDC.

The CDC also noted that suicide rates have increased 30 percent in more than half the states from 1999 to 2016. Suicide is now the 10th most common cause of death in the U.S. It is one of just three leading causes, along with Alzheimer's disease and drug overdoses, that are on the rise. Often, warning signs might be disguised and not everyone in that person's life sees them. In 2017 the medical examiner's office hired Michael Staley, a suicide prevention research coordinator, to find out why Utah has such high rates of suicide.

"One of the statistical things we know is that one of the best things we can do to reduce suicide when we are concerned about people is to continue to wrap around loved ones around them, not necessarily professionals", Walker said.

"While suicide is nobody's fault, it's everybody's problem, and we all have a role to play in preventing suicide", Staley said. About 3 to 4 females per 100,000 died by suicide in Maryland during that period.

Those who need help can contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline for help at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
