  • Chelsea Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Ratcliffe, Britain's richest person, made an approach to Blues owner Roman Abramovich, according to the Daily Mail.

It follows reports that an offer from British businessman Jim Ratcliffe to buy the club has been rejected.

He has allegedly signaled his intention to purchase the highly-rated football outfit no thanks to recent visa woes surrounding Chelsea's Russian owner Abramovich.

Sportmail reports that Ratcliffe is among a number of approaches that have been rejected, including from China.

Seven months ago, he bought the Swiss club Lausanne-Sport for an undisclosed sum as part of his company's commitment to local sport.

At the last count, Sunday Times estimated Ratcliffe's net worth be around KSh 2.7 trillion while Chelsea's owner Abramovich is worth KSh 1.2 trillion. Ineos's annual turnover is about £45bn and it employs more than 18,500 people in 22 countries.

Lyon put an end to Nabil Fekir’s proposed transfer to Liverpool
The 24-year-old Fekir reportedly had his medical with a view to a move for 65 million euros ($77 million), plus eventual bonuses. A five-year-deal with the Anfield club worth £140,000 per week had been agreed but confusion swiftly followed.

The Mail quoted an anonymous "friend of Ratcliffe" as saying: "Shelling out £2bn or so would seem like a drop in the ocean for Jim but at the moment he is torn about what to do".

The 65-year-old, who grew up in a council house in Failsworth, Lancashire, was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

In the last couple of years, Abramovich has invested heavily and his money has no doubt helped Chelsea claim five Premier League titles, the FA Cup, the Champions League as well as the Europa League.

But, following Theresa May's crackdown on wealthy Russians living in Britain after the poisoning of Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia in Salisbury, Abramovich, 51, has faced difficulties obtaining a United Kingdom visa. The 51-year-old was also granted Israeli citizenship which meant that he could visit Britain up to six months in a year but will have to apply for a work permit if he wants to keep doing business in the United Kingdom.

But it appears Ratcliffe won't be getting near Chelsea any time soon, despite dwarfing Abramovich's personal wealth by around £11bn.

'We can not comment on rumour and speculation, ' he said.
