  • Trump to leave G7 summit early amid feud with Trudeau, Macron

Trump left the summit early headed for his meeting with the leader of North Korea next Tuesday.

President Donald Trump told foreign leaders at the Group of Seven summit that they must dramatically reduce trade barriers with the United States or they would risk losing access to the worlds largest economy, delivering his most defiant trade threat yet to his counterparts from around the globe.

Trudeau, who has been sparring with Mr. Trump on trade in recent days, announced at the conclusion of the G-7 summit in Canada that the retaliatory tariffs will go into effect July 1.

In their communique, the leaders of the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Italy, Germany and Japan agreed on the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade" and the importance of fighting protectionism.

Tweeted Trump in a series of tweets starting last night: "Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the US massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers".

That move was met with criticism at home, including from Republicans, and announcements of retaliatory tariffs from USA allies.

The EU said it will impose the "rebalancing" tariffs on about $3.3 billion (2.8 billion euros) worth of US steel, bourbon, agricultural products including sweet corn, orange juice, cranberries and certain clothing made of cotton.

Trump's press conference Saturday marked his first solo press conference since February 16, 2017.

But in a tweet after flying out of Canada, the U.S. president showed he was in no mood to back down in any trade dispute.

He said he didn't blame the other world leaders, saying their countries struck good deals at America's expense, and said he blamed previous USA presidents.

OPEC rumors from the USA drive oil prices lower
The group and Russian Federation are due to meet at its headquarters in Vienna on June 22 to discuss production policy. As interesting as all these numbers may be, the June 22 OPEC meeting is drawing the most attention right now.

Earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel floated an idea to set up a mechanism to resolve trade battles with the United States and prevent future ones, according to a French official at the gathering.

Merkel said there was broad agreement among G7 leaders that tariffs and other trade barriers should be reduced, though she acknowledged that differences with the United States remained.

Trump said Friday he thinks the group will produce a joint statement. We have a tremendous trade imbalance.

"If the expectation was that a weekend in attractive Charlevoix...was going to transform the president's outlook on trade and the world, then we didn't quite reach that bar", Trudeau said.

Vice President Mike Pence told Trudeau he would have to agree to that before Trump would agree to meet him. We have a world to run.

Russian Federation was thrown out of the group in 2014 over the annexation of Crimea.

In public, Trump bantered easily with his fellow leaders, but the meeting came at a tense moment in the relationships, with allies steaming over Trump's new tariffs on imported steel and aluminum from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

Speaking during an impromptu news conference at the G7 summit in Canada on Saturday, Trump said his ultimate goal was the elimination of all trade duties.

The other six G7 nations reiterated their support for the Paris agreement on climate change and acknowledged they would have to continue their fight without the U.S.
