Trump talks tariffs, NAFTA and G7 relationships as he leaves summit early

  • Donald Trump at G7 summit

Trump, who repeated that the tariffs are meant to protect U.S. industry and workers from what he describes as unfair worldwide competition, said he had suggested to the other G7 leaders that all trade barriers, including tariffs and subsidies, be eliminated. On Friday, Mr Trump made a surprise call for Moscow to be readmitted, but German Chancellor Angela Merkel said other members were against the idea.

Trump placed the blame on his predecessor, President Barack Obama.

"We're talking to all countries", Trump said, denouncing what he said were huge existing tariffs on USA exports around the world.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said: "We are in agreement that a return of Russian Federation to the G7 can not happen unless substantial progress is made in terms of the problems with Ukraine".

"Were looking for peace in the world".

Mr Trump is leaving early to head to Singapore for his landmark summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, meaning he will miss some of the topics advanced by Mr Trudeau.

The two-day summit in Canada has been marred by a tit-for-tat exchanges of hostile tweets, with USA trading partners furious over Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico as part of his "America First" agenda.

Republican Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska said Trump's comments on eliminating tariffs among G7 nations would be "tremendous news" if the President is serious about the issue, adding, "I would happily carry his bag to every single meeting of those negotiations".

President Trump's remarks were so free-wheeling that the panel on MSNBC's AM Joy wondered about his "state of mind".

One US soldier killed and four wounded in Somalia attack
Somali officials have said civilians have been killed in more than one joint USA military operation with Somali forces. The United States has intensified efforts in Somalia during the past two years, picking up the pace of drone strikes.

"It's going to stop or we'll stop trading with them", he said.

Trump left before the end of the summit on Saturday. "And we charge nothing", he said.

Though the US appears increasingly isolated from its allies, Trump on Saturday insisted that his relationships with other leaders remains "great".

Mr. Trump said on Saturday that he had told the G7 leaders that the USA required fair access to markets and an end to unfair trade practices.

For example, on Friday evening, the White House issued a statement saying Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were very close to a deal to rework the North American Free Trade Agreement.

President Trump proposed a major shakeup of the world's economic order during a summit in Canada this week, suggesting the world's big economies drop all tariffs and market-distoring subsidies and go to a fully free system of trade. Canadians, for example, said Trudeau pushed back firmly on Trumps imposition of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. He says gender equality must "cut through" everything the G-7 does.

President Donald Trump on Saturday doubled down on his call for Russian Federation to be readmitted into the G7 and blamed his predecessor for Russia's aggression in Crimea. Then he tried to ease tension with friendly banter and vague claims of progress in trade talks.

Trump contends that other countries "have been taking advantage of the United States on trade".
