Sebastian Vettel flies to Canadian GP pole for Ferrari, Hamilton struggles

  • Pole sitter Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel right of Germany chats with third place finisher Red Bull driver Max Verstappen of Netherlands after the qualifying session for the F1 Canadian Grand Prix auto race Saturday

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo both went quicker than Hamilton in second practice, but the Mercedes driver wasn't too anxious ahead of Saturday's qualifying session.

Despite that, Mercedes performed well in all three practice sessions followed by a superb effort from Bottas in qualifying.

Mercedes' decision to choose the fewest number of hyper-soft tyres for this weekend out of all the teams may have contributed as neither driver had tried them until Saturday morning, but Hamilton can not blame only that as Bottas ended up on the front row. "Mercedes look very quick there, but I think we are not too far away so it was just, in general, a positive day". "We need to understand more about everything today but let's see what we can do tomorrow. It has brought me to where I am right now and after the race is not the right time to talk". The circuit, a layout of fast straights broken up by quick chicanes and hemmed in by concrete barriers, has tended to play to the horsepower advantage of their vehicle.

Kimi Raikkonen said he was only "a bit off" the ideal line before the mistake which compromised his final qualifying attempt in Canada and saw him drop to fifth on the grid.

But Ferrari often start weekends slowly only to leap up the timing sheets on Saturday when it matters, and Vettel was only 0.272secs behind Verstappen's pace-setting lap. "Thanks to the team for fixing the vehicle yesterday after I hit the wall".

But despite Red Bull picking up where they left off in Monaco, Ricciardo knows the team won't have it as easy over the next couple of days.

Elaborating on his small mistake, Vettel says he was searching for small improvements between his two runs in Q3 and was unsure which of the two laps was going to prove to be quickest.

Adam Silver: 'Saddens Me' NBA Champion Won't Be Invited to White House
Trump said Friday that the Washington Capitals , who clinched the Stanley Cup on Thursday night, are likely to be invited. So I want to give him full credit when his team beats the Cleveland Cavaliers for another league championship.

Past year he dominated the grand prix, starting from pole and leading every lap on his way to the win, while behind him there was plenty of drama.

"It's hard to judge our single lap pace from today as we haven't run the HyperSoft and some of our closest competition looked to have had less than ideal sessions". Of course I haven't scored the points I should have scored, but it is not only my fault.

"Yesterday, I wasn't really in charge". "Gilles Villeneuve, the favourite driver of Enzo Ferrari".

"A lot of Ferrari fans - probably a lot of them from back then as well when they were kids".

Lance Stroll made a mess of the two big braking zones into the hairpin and the final chicane ending his chances of progressing as the local boy was 17th.

"It's not always that we start right out the box but it just started right". Q1 was smooth, Q2 was smooth and so was Q3 in the end. The Canadian teenager heads into it on the back of a frustrating weekend in Monaco where he finished two laps down and dead last. For me it was straightforward - the first lap was there. And having such good momentum at the moment I think a penalty would take a bit of wind out of our sails.
