One US soldier killed and four wounded in Somalia attack

  • Since 2007 Al-Shabaab an Al Qaeda linked group has been fighting to overthrow the internationally backed government in Somalia

Somali officials have said civilians have been killed in more than one joint USA military operation with Somali forces.

The U.S. has about 1,000 special operations personnel in Africa. The U.S. provided advice, assistance and aerial surveillance during the mission, the statement said.

The New York Times reports that al-Shabab has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Although one of the wounded Americans did not receive additional care after being treated in the field, the other three and the wounded local soldier were medically evacuated for follow-up care.

The U.S. Africa Command reported killing 27 al-Shabaab terrorists Saturday, and in 2014 the U.S. said it killed the group's leader Ahmed Abdi Godane in a drone strike.

One U.S. special operations soldier was killed and four U.S. service members were wounded in an attack in Somalia on Friday, June 8, 2018.

"We attacked a military base killed one USA soldier, two Kenyan soldiers and nine Somali soldiers from Jubbaland state".

President Donald Trump called the soldiers heroes Friday night. The group was blamed for a truck bombing in Mogadishu in October that killed more than 500 people and raised concerns about its ability to build larger explosives.

"My thoughts and prayers are with the families of our serviceman who was killed and his fellow servicemen who were wounded in Somolia".

Africa Command said the combined US, Somali and Kenyan force included some 800 troops and was part of a mission in the area tasked with setting up a permanent combat outpost when they came under attack.

Hundreds of newly trained al-Shabab fighters perform military exercises in the Lafofe area south of Mogadishu, Somalia, on February 17, 2011.

For several years, USA special operations troops have been on the front lines in Somalia, advising local troops in a long running campaign against the al-Qaida aligned al-Shabab group. "In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia we will continue to degrade the functional networks of ISIS in Somalia and al-Shabaab as these groups pose a direct threat to Americans, our allies, and interests in the region".

The United States has intensified efforts in Somalia during the past two years, picking up the pace of drone strikes.

The recent attack in Somalia comes as a challenging time for Special Operations Forces on the African continent.
