Xi, Modi Hold Bilateral Talks in China, Agree to Improve Ties

This is India's first participation as a full member of the Council.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in China on Saturday to attend the 2-day long 18th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit.

The SCO Summit is scheduled to take place on Sunday, with talks expected to focus on terrorism and security. During his visit to Qingdao, a coastal city in east China's Shandong Province.

The ties between the two neighbouring nuclear powers had nosedived following last year's Doklam standoff as well as due to a number of other issues issues including China blocking India's move to get Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar banned by the United Nations and its opposition to India's bid for the Nuclear Suppliers Group membership.

President Xi Jinping accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation to visit India for the next informal summit.

The leaders will be addressed by Xi this evening at an opening banquet from 7:45 p.m. (1145 GMT), according to the official schedule, before taking in a fireworks display. Officials said the USA pull out from the Iran nuclear deal, Washington's sanctions against Russian Federation under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) may also figure in the talks. India, along with Pakistan had become a full-time member during Astana summit in June 2017.

The 2015 nuclear deal lifted that barrier.

The SCO is a permanent intergovernmental global organisation that focuses on strengthening mutual trust and neighbourliness among the member states and promoting their effective cooperation in politics, trade, the economy, research, technology and culture, and making joint efforts to maintain and ensure peace, security and stability in the region.

"We have been a faithful player to this commitment, we've done our best, we've shown our good intentions. One of the outcomes of today's meeting is that we have agreed we will move forward in identifying a specific project initially in the area of capacity building", Gokhale said.

The tensions over Iran come as another nuclear issue dominates headlines, with Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un preparing for an unprecedented summit in Singapore. India, which recently joined the SCO, might have a few words to say about China's behavior in contested territory.

The President said that China Pakistan Economic Corridor was an important part of Belt and Road Project.

India enjoys deep friendship and multi-dimensional ties with the Member States of the SCO.

The two countries also signed an agreement under which China has agreed to import non-Basmati rice from India which is likely to bridge the ballooning trade deficit to a certain extent.

The SCO has two sub-divisions including Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) and SCO Secretariat.
