  • Vettel beats Bottas, Verstappen to Canada pole

The Red Bull driver turned in the quickest laps in both practice runs at the Canadian Grand Prix on Friday, when Lance Stroll of Montreal and Nicholas Latifi of Toronto gave fans a rare look at two Canadians on the track at once.

He said after Practice Two: "I would say that Mercedes' pace was really fast today. Also myself didn't get the rhythm yet so missing a little bit of the laps but overall we tried to go through the programme as good as we could".

"The auto balance has been good from the first run so it has just been a case of small balance tuning to keep the vehicle in the right window as the track grip came up. I think if I get any more I might headbutt someone".

However, when asked a similar question during the official FIA press conference on Thursday morning, he added: "I'm getting really exhausted of all the questions".

Vettel hasn't won a race since round two in Bahrain, but the Ferrari driver - who is second to Lewis Hamilton in the drivers' championship - is hopeful of a strong result on Sunday.

"I don't know, I haven't seen much of the times of the others so it's hard to read yet".

Gennady golovkin stripped of ibf title for failing to agree madatory defence
Golovkin - who boasts a 38-0 record with 34 knockouts - had a hearing late last month over not agreeing to the mandatory fight. Golovkin has held the IBF middleweight title since 2015 when he knocked out David Lemieux on pay-per-view.

"But I think on some tracks we can fight for a win and others we can fight for a podium, but when you want to challenge for a title you need to be there every single weekend and at the moment we are not at that place yet".

"Overall we've had a fairly straightforward day, the auto has run reliably and it was just the red flags and virtual safety cars that caused us to have to adapt the plan a little", Shovlin revealed. "It will be very close again".

"Straightaway it wasn't ideal and you kind of expect it here".

On the basis of Friday practice, Sebastian Vettel does not see himself as a contender for victory even though Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen set the second fastest time.

Vettel believes Ferrari have made the right call with strategy, particularly as it means they are likely to be able to run longer before making their first stop, and admitted his surprise with the direction Red Bull took. Mercedes decided not to use the hyper-soft after bringing just five sets of the pink-striped compound to this weekend's race and will test the tyre for the first time in Montreal in final practice on Saturday morning.

After locking up into the hairpin during both of his Q3 runs, championship leader Hamilton was beaten by Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull's Max Verstappen, as well as Vettel.
