  • Season's 1st tropical storm forms in eastern Pacific

Tropical cyclones have generally slowed more in the Northern Hemisphere where they are also known as hurricanes and typhoons and where more of these storms typically occur each year.

This isn't about how powerful a storm's winds are, just how fast it chugs along. The change is even more dramatic in storms that have made landfall from the North Atlantic - they're moving 20 percent slower.

The unusually slow-moving Hurricane Harvey was a recent example.

Kossin published his findings Wednesday in the journal Nature. But Kossin thinks the slower speed of movement - which naturally adds more rainfall to any region the storm crosses may actually be a bigger deal than the simple increase in rain overall.

That's the real risk of a slower storm. Between 1949 and 2016, tropical cyclone translation speeds declined 10 percent worldwide, the study says.

"These trends are nearly certainly increasing local rainfall totals and freshwater flooding", Kossin said, "which is associated with very high mortality risk".

Alan O'Neill (2018), "Sons of Anarchy" actor
TMZ reports that Alan O'Neill's body was discovered by his girlfriend in the hallway of her apartment in Los Angeles. Among his other roles, O'Neill played the regular role of Keith McGrath in the drama Fair Cityfrom 2006 to 2012.

With the exception of the Indian Ocean region, which tends to behave differently, "all the other regions show this consistent slowing", Kossin says.

'The laws of thermodynamics reveal that, as the atmosphere warms by 1°C, the amount of moisture it can hold increases by 7 per cent.

He said beyond the changes in regularity and intensity of cyclones, their very "behaviour" was being affected by climate change.

The result is more rainfall and more damage to buildings as hurricanes hover over population centers for longer periods of time.

Kossin concluded that the trend has all the signs of human-induced climate change.
