Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Tuesday he would not allow the Corker tariff proposal to be brought up as a freestanding bill.

McConnell spoke with Ingraham the day after he canceled most of the Senate's traditional month-long August recess because of the "historic obstruction by Senate Democrats of the president's nominees" and the failure to pass appropriations bills.

But many Republicans senators hailed the decision, saying they were willing to give up some of their downtime to catch up on the Senate's work.

"The amount of work we have to do is inconceivable to me we can't use these weeks".

Alexander has other plans for the summer session.

In order to take back the Senate from the deeply unpopular Republican Party-which is headed by the "least popular first-year president on record"-Democrats must both defend all 26 of their current seats and flip two Republican seats". Republicans have nine on the ballot. Dean Heller of Nevada, who is facing re-election in a state Hillary Clinton won in 2016.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) recently proposed similar legislation, which was also backed by Toomey and Flake, as well as by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., undergoes treatment for brain cancer in his home state.

McConnell said, "The bottom line is clear: Under the policies of this unified Republican government, American workers, families, and business owners are achieving economic growth that is unmatched in recent memory".

Senate Democratic leaders said they welcomed the additional time to address health care costs, including prescription drug prices.

French Open glance: Keys, Stephens resume rivalry in Paris
Stephens struggled to reproduce her performance during the fortnight at Flushing Meadows over the remainder of the season. Novak Djokovic found himself two sets down against Marco Cecchinato, losing the second set 7-6 (4) in a tiebreak.

"We Democrats welcome this additional time because it gives us the opportunity to address an issue that's on the top of the minds of so numerous American people, and one that Republicans have badly mishandled at this point: health care", Sen.

"The reason is simple: We have too much left to do for the American people", McConnell said during a speech on the Senate floor Tuesday.

Democratic co-sponsors include Mark Warner of Virginia, Brian Schatz of Hawaii and Chris Van Hollen of Maryland.

The abrupt adjourning was also motivated by the Republicans' fear that they didn't have enough votes to counter a move by Democrats, supported by Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, which would force the chamber to vote on measures that would ensure coverage for contraception by insurance companies and strengthen the state's abortion laws.

He said Democrats have made it more hard to confirm Trump's judicial nominees, as well. Democratic senators sponsoring the bill are Sens.

Typically, Congress takes off the month of August, and that time spent away from Washinton is particularly important for members running in elections back home. McConnell said last month that he considers confirming judges his top priority.

Prompting criticism from many of his fellow Republicans as well as business groups, Trump decided last month to open a trade investigation into whether auto imports had damaged the USA auto industry, which could lead to tariffs of up to 25 percent on "national security grounds".
