Military police opened an investigation Thursday into the fatal shooting of a Palestinian who was killed by soldiers the day before in the West Bank village of Nebi Saleh, the IDF said in a statement.

The Health Ministry says Izzideen Tamimi was shot dead during clashes with Israeli forces in the village of Nabi Saleh, near Ramallah.

The IDF's Arabic spokesperson commented on the death of a female Palestinian medic shot last Friday during the Hamas-led riots near the security fence at the Israel-Gaza border, saying she was "no angel of mercy".

The Israeli army said a group of youths threw rocks at soldiers in the village.

Ahed Tamimi's case gained worldwide attention when footage emerged of her slapping and kicking two Israeli soldiers next to her house in the West Bank in December, with the soldiers not responding to the provocation. But the vast majority of Palestinian casualties, including over 3,700 people wounded by Israeli fire, have been unarmed.

The Israeli investigation is expected to continue for quite some time, and officials say only a "small number of bullets" were fired at the time Najjar was killed.

Eyewitnesses said the soldiers assassinated the Palestinian, directly and repeatedly firing at him, in addition to attacking dozens of Palestinians.

Demonstrators have also called for the "right of return" to lost ancestral homes in what is now Israel.

Israel's use of potentially lethal force against the protesters has drawn worldwide criticism.

Palestinian political factions are calling for a "million-man" demonstration on Friday to show solidarity with Jerusalem and demand an end to the decade-long Israeli/Egyptian blockade of the Gaza Strip.

Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 Middle East war.

Tensions were further heightened last month after the US moved its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in a step seen by both Israel and the Palestinians as siding with Israel on the most sensitive issue in the conflict.
