Macron said the message of other G7 leaders to Trump on the Iran deal should be: "You're not comfortable with an agreement signed by your predecessor, maybe just because it was signed by your predecessor, but don't stop others from respecting it and don't push Iran to leave, because today it's the best protection we have".

Macron has concluded that the other members of the G7 - the U.K., Germany, Japan, France, Italy and Canada - must stand up to the US over Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum from the European Union, Canada and Mexico as well as other issues.

Macron said he's faced criticism that he's been too friendly with the USA president.

"Because these 6 countries represent values, they represent an economic market which has the weight of history behind it and which is now a true worldwide force".

Late Thursday, Trump tweeted an apparent reply.

Mr Macron, widely seen as having developed one of the warmest relationships with Mr Trump among world leaders, did little to hide his frustration before the gathering.

Trump signalled that he was in no mood to compromise as he met with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who has tried to cultivate a friendly relationship with the American president. "And he's going to talk to them", Larry Kudlow, Trump's top economic adviser, told reporters in Washington.

"We must continue to work together because a world where there are no rules is a world where nobody wins", he warned.

The US president also has frosty relations with Trudeau, the summit host.

After Trump chose not to exempt Canada and the European Union from tariffs, both threatened punitive economic measures of their own. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is expected to brief the G7 leaders on the issue.

"If I can get the president to actually realize that what he's doing is counterproductive for his own goals as well, perhaps we can move forward in a smarter way".

A few days ago, Trudeau called the metal tariffs-25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum-"insulting".

Gauthier, who worked in the aluminum industry for 31 years before his retirement, said people in the region want to be like "cousins" with the Americans and take part in free trade for the benefit of both countries.

Europe faces renewed domestic economic and political challenges in addition to those posed by Trump's unilateralism.

"To the degree one can ever take what is said as a joke", the source told CNN.

A French presidency official said that while G7 members would raise their unhappiness over the tariffs with Mr Trump, they would not deliver an ultimatum that he drop them because the summit "isn't the place where you negotiate things like that".

Before departing for Canada, Mr Trump tweeted: "Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the United States massive tariffs and create a non-monetary barriers". Japan has said it can not normalize diplomatic relations without the issue's being resolved.

The Trump administration has threatened to impose sanctions against European companies that continue to do business with Tehran, an effort the USA has said it will resist. Intense diplomacy from Europe to save an global nuclear agreement with Iran also failed.
