Stephens is second only to Halep in break points converted with 27.

Sharapova's autobiography - the 31-year-old said her rivalry with Williams started after 2004 Wimbledon, where Sharapova won her first Grand Slam by defeating Williams in straight sets.

"I hadn't had a withdrawal in - I don't know how long. maybe like six years or something", Sharapova said.

She improved to 3-0 against her longtime pal and Fed Cup teammate Keys, including their US Open final last September.

"When you play and you win against an old-time player with a lot of experience, it gives you a lot of trust", said Muguruza, who at 24 is seven years Sharapova's junior.

Simona Halep will face the victor of Thursday's all-American semifinal between Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys. Three previous times, she was unbothered enough to reach third sets.

Top seed Simona Halep fought back to triumph in a bruising French Open quarter-final against Germany's Angelique Kerber and stand two wins away from her first Grand Slam title.

Stephens can join Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati as the only American women to win a French Open title since 1987.

With his good run at Roland Garros, Del Potro is now guaranteed to return to the top four in the rankings for the first time in more than four years.

Northern California judge ousted for Stanford sex assault sentence
Turner was instead sentenced to six months in jail for sexually assaulting a young woman outside a fraternity house on campus. On Tuesday, Santa Clara County voters agreed and recalled the judge from office after his almost 15-year career on the bench.

The Romanian also came up one victory shy of a major championship at the Australian Open in January, beaten there by Caroline Wozniacki.

Spain´s Garbine Muguruza (R) is congratulated by Russia´s Maria Sharapova after winning, at the end of their women´s singles quarter-final match on day eleven of The Roland Garros 2018 French Open on June 6, 2018. I just went and searched for her in the training room.

"I mean, it's not that important, because it's constantly this thing going on, you know. since a year ago", she said after a crushing 6-2, 6-1 last-eight victory over Maria Sharapova in Paris. Yes, Muguruza has won three of their four head to head meetings, but Halep has won their only clay clash, so the head to head series is pretty irrelevant to this match-up.

Sharapova looked nervous from the beginning and was never allowed to settle as Muguruza posted her first victory against the Russian at the fourth attempt.

The signs were ominous when the five-times Grand Slam champion coughed up three nervy double-faults in the opening game.

Halep made quick work of Muguruza, the 2016 champion who entered the match having not lost a set to this point. Ten-time champion Nadal completed a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 win over Diego Schwartzman.

There was no doubt entering Thursday's semifinals that there would be an American woman advancing to the final of the French Open.

Of less logic but ample joy would be Nadal's semifinal opponent for Friday, Juan Martin del Potro, who famously nearly quit the game with belligerent wrists himself, but on Thursday found another crest with his first French Open semifinal berth in nine long, trying years, when he edged Marin Cilic, 7-6 (7-5), 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.
