The Capitals on Thursday night won the Stanley Cup for the first time in a franchise history that dates back to 1974, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 in Game 5.

Captain Alex Ovechkin, who scored an early power-play goal and was the playoff MVP, and his teammates are Washington's first championship hockey team - and the city's first champion in a major pro sport since the Redskins won the Super Bowl in early 1992.

The Golden Knights wrap up a storybook year, advancing all the way to the final in their first year of existence.

In the second round versus the Pittsburgh Penguins which saw the Capitals exorcise their demons, Ovechkin delivered.

Cavaliers face now-or-never home stand in NBA Finals
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors are in a familiar position as the 2018 NBA Finals shifts to Quicken Loans Arena. The question is if it comes when the Cavs are in a position to do something with it or if it'll be a freaky consolation prize.

"The support and energy of Caps fans has been incredible, and the growing crowds each night at the Game 1 and Game 2 watch parties meant that we needed to ticket Thursday's event in order to ensure that we could keep everyone safe and that people could enter and exit the Arena in an orderly way", Monumental Sports & Entertainment said in a news release. It was the kind of insane intense game the Stanley Cup Final deserved, and Washington Capitals center Lars Eller turned out to be the hero of the night.

The Capitals had not advanced beyond the second round of the playoffs since the 1998 Cup final when they were swept by Detroit, but defeated Columbus, arch-rival Pittsburgh, and Tampa Bay before downing expansion Vegas this spring.

Why? Because this fan went out and got a tattoo celebrating the team winning the Cup this year. Vegas lost three games in the first three rounds and never lost more than three in a row in the regular season.

Lars Eller scored the go-ahead goal for Washington with 7:37 remaining. It was a great play that gave Washington the lead with just shy of eight minutes left in the game.
