  • Amazon Premier League rights

The grand 2019-2022 Premier League TV rights meat raffle is taking place today and the big news is that Amazon have come hulking into the mix by snaffling up one of the final two broadcast packages.

Inc. bought a package of live broadcasting rights for English Premier League soccer, the first foray by a US tech giant into a top European championship.

The online retail behemoth and streaming service becomes the first over-the-top streaming service to successfully bid for exclusive Premier League rights and joins pay-TV rivals Sky and BT in next year's line-up of providers.

The other rights package that was available to purchase was bought for £90 million by BT, enabling it to exclusively broadcast 20 midweeek games over three seasons.

According to report in the Daily Mirror, Amazon were attracted by the prospect of the Premier League's growing audience in the United States as well as the possibility of more people subscribing to Amazon Prime as a result.

They will show one full Bank Holiday round of games and one further midweek round on their Prime streaming service.

It will offer the matches as part of its Amazon Prime Video subscription, it is said, with all members getting access to the live streams at no extra cost.

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave Real Madrid this summer
The widespread rumours about Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Real Madrid are refusing to die down. The former Manchester United forward is also unhappy with Zinedine Zidane's departure.

Amazon, which started as an online retailer, has built up an increasingly impressive sports portfolio and broadcasts the US Open tennis, ATP World Tour Tennis events - where they outbid Sky by offering £50 million - and National Football League games.

Independent.ie understands that the prospect of a global Premier League television deal could be discussed in the near future, with one rights holder owner working in partnership with the league to broadcast the matches around the world.

The good news for UK Prime members?

Sky will continue to show the most games after agreeing in February to pay 3.58 billion pounds for 128 matches a season for three years, including new Saturday evening fixtures.

The Premier League have confirmed that global revenue is set to be distributed based on league finish, with the ratio rising from 1.6.1 to 1.8.1.

"When the Premier League was formed in 1992 nobody could have envisaged the scale of global growth in the competition which exists now", Scudamore said.

Recent days have seen claims that BT Sport and Amazon had taken one each of the previously unsold pair of deals, that has now been confirmed. However, the entire auction has fallen short of the Premier League's hopes on revenue.
