  • Jordan's King set to ask PM to resign amid protests sources

Following demonstrations last week, King Abdullah II ordered the government to shelve the fuel and electricity rises.

Razzaz was the director general of the Social Security Corporation from 2006-2010.

Jordan's king is the ultimate decision-maker on policy, but also positions himself as a unifying force above the political fray. It was not clear whether Mr. Razzaz would pursue the proposal to increase the tax rate on workers by at least five percentage points and on businesses by 20 to 40 percentage points.

The king praised Al-Mulki for his "bravery in taking hard decisions that do not gain popularity", and asked him to stay on in a caretaker role until the new government is formed.

In addition, the proportion of income taxpayers in Jordan is expected to rise from 4.5 per cent to 10 per cent once the bill is enacted. And last week it announced a new price increase for electricity and fuel, before revoking it under orders from the king following protests.

Many Jordanians really feel they're being squeezed financially by a authorities they understand as corrupt and say they don't seem to be getting providers for the taxes they're requested to pay.

The premier's meeting with the king came hours after around 5,000 people rallied outside Mulki's office in Amman, on the fifth consecutive day of protests in Amman and other cities.

"We won't submit to the dictates of the IMF", Tarawneh said after meeting Prime Minister Hani Mulki, local media reported.

Kudlow added that China has yet to cooperate and has failed to provide solutions, creating an imbalance of trading conditions. Kudlow also touted the overall economic strength.

"Taxes are unbearable", said Ashraf Jarar, an insurance consultant out among the protestors.

Despite a decision by the government, upon orders by His Majesty King Abdullah, to cancel significant hikes in the prices of fuel and electricity driven by the rising prices of crude oil in worldwide markets, protests continued across Jordan with increasing demands for sacking the government.

Thousands of protesters took to the streets across the kingdom - In the Irbid and Jarash provinces, the cities of Amman, Aqaba, Salt, Al-Karak and the Jordan Rift area - demanding to cancel the raising of taxes and staple food, which they claim will increase poverty and distress.

"The new prime minister will face a number of strategic factors in dealing with the unprecedented street protests, the most important of which is to. open convincing channels of dialogue", he told AFP.

Ali Abous, head of an umbrella group for 15 unions and professional associations with half a million members, says a strike is planned for Wednesday.

In 2016, the International Monetary Fund gave Jordan $723 million to help overhaul its economy. "This government is shameful", demonstrators chanted as police prevented them from approaching the heavily guarded government offices.

He affirmed that it is unfair for citizens to be left alone to carry the burden of financial reform, stressing that shortcomings in providing vital services, such as education, healthcare and transport, will not be tolerated.
