Lee was sentenced to five years in prison in November 2017 for "subverting state power" because of comments he made and information he circulated on social media about democracy, freedom of expression and human rights in China.

Western media reported at the time that the death toll from the resulting massacre ranged from 100 to 3,000, but according to a secret United Kingdom diplomatic cable released in 2017, up to 10,000 protesters may have been killed.

"As Liu Xiaobo wrote in his 2010 Nobel Peace Prize speech, delivered in absentia, "the ghosts of June 4th have not yet been laid to rest".

"I think this gathering is very meaningful and I am very touched to see so many people from all across Hong Kong and other areas to remember people who died back in 1989", said a tourist from China surnamed Luo.

However, those who attended said they still felt a duty to pay tribute to the demonstrators who had died when Chinese authorities sent in tanks to crush a peaceful seven-week sit-in to demand democratic reforms.

Chinese students and workers occupied Beijing's Tiananmen Square for almost two months and began protests calling for the recognition of universal values such as democracy, freedom, rule of law and human rights in China, which resulted in the army's violent suppression of protesters from June 3-4.

"We urge the U.S.to abandon its prejudices, correct its mistakes, stop making irresponsible remarks and interfering in China's internal affairs", said ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying at a regular briefing.

On Monday, the massacre's 29th anniversary, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo released a statement calling for the Chinese regime to be accountable.

"The Chinese government long ago gave an assessment of the political turbulence that took place then".

Tens of thousands of people gathered in a downtown park in Hong Kong for an annual public commemoration of the crackdown.

However, the full truth about the incident remains unknown and the Chinese government has yet to offer redress to victims and their families, the MAC said in its statement, while expressing regret over the matter.
