  • Kathleen Wynne says she won’t be Ontario premier, urges voters to ensure an NDP or PC minority government

"It's a realization that the Kathleen Wynne brand might be more detrimental than the Liberal party brand", she said.

If you think about it, why would you allow Liberals to hold the balance of power in a minority government, when 80 per cent voters have already rejected them retaining power anyway?

"Should I be given the opportunity to serve as premier I will be one of the biggest champions the steel industry has ever seen", Horwath said.

Marie-France Lalonde, the party's candidate in Ottawa-Orleans and a former minister in Wynne's government, said the announcement won't dissuade her from door knocking.

Provincial support could take the form of worker training or education, but the Liberal party is still figuring out how to best support the industry if the tariffs persist, Ms. Wynne said.

The Liberal leader effectively conceded defeat at a news conference today in Toronto. "All of the things that Doug Ford has said would add up to a $40-billion hole and they have no idea how they would find that".

Former Liberal prime minister Paul Martin, campaigning with Ms. Wynne in Waterloo, Ont., on Friday afternoon, applauded the federal government's "very strong" stance on USA tariffs. The worry for the party is that the Liberals could lose official party status, with some polls suggesting the Liberals could win fewer than the required eight seats.

"I know that there are people who are trying to decide how to vote on June 7 and they are anxious about a majority (Progressive Conservative) Doug Ford government", Wynne said.

Wynne concluded her statements saying she was going to work as hard as she can to elect as many Liberals as possible, including herself as she campaigns for reelection in her Toronto riding of Don Valley East. But as the polls painted an increasingly grim picture, she was forced to come to terms with her own waning popularity. Many who are eligible to vote in this election were not yet in kindergarten the last time the government changed.

She says she will keep campaigning up until Thursday and won't say if she will stay on a Liberal leader after the election.

What Doug Ford offers to Ontario is worse than a B-grade horror movie that we hope won't be coming soon to a theatre near you.

"They're hoping they can salvage (the party).it's about saying to people: don't abandon us".

"We need to do everything to make sure we get at least eight seats in the we can be in a position again to be a moderating influence on the other two parties", he said.

"We are going to do far better than anybody thinks", Mr. Martin said. Doug Ford has attracted many Ontarians with his populist rhetoric.

That money for the environment - a sharp reduction compared to current green spending and that budgeted by the rival NDP challengers, would go towards a fund to invest in new technologies to reduce emissions, the hiring of more conservation officers, increased policing of major polluters, and resources "to remove garbage in our neighbourhoods and parks".
