US search firm to end MH370 hunt in 'coming days'

  • A wreck hunter's claims authorities are not collecting debris from MH370 have raised fears Malaysia does not want to find the missing plane

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today that the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 which ended this week with no trace found may be resumed if new evidence comes to light.

Following an unsuccessful $160 million search effort conducted by Australia, China and Malaysia that was called off in January 2017, Malaysia this year agreed to pay Ocean Infinity, a technology company specializing in collecting high resolution seabed data, up to $70 million if it found the plane within 90 days.

While the outcome so far is "extremely disappointing", Plunkett said the company produced a lot of quality data and covered such a vast area speedily.

Ocean Infinity didn't rule out the possibility of resuming its search for MH370 in the future.

A spokesperson for Ocean Infinity confirmed that they were "aware of the reports" of the possible black box signal four years ago, and were heading to the area to check it out for themselves "before we head to port and bring this search to a close".

The four-year long search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has formally ended. A wing fragment and part of the plane's flaperon are among the remnants that have turned up.

The Malaysian government does not now plan any further searches of its own for the missing flight, despite pressure from the families of those who were onboard.

The Australian-led search had spent almost three years scouring 120,000 square kilometers before the hunt was declared over in January 2017.

"The commitment that the new government in Malaysia has made to prioritising finding MH370 was very good to hear".

The search area deemed by experts to be the most likely crash site was only 25,000 square kilometres (9,650 square miles), roughly the size of Vermont.

The latter used the ship Seabed Constructor with Norwegian flag, equipped with eight drones with sonars and cameras capable of submerging up to 6,000 meters deep.

"There've been so many theories and rumours and ... we don't know what is true and what isn't", she told Australian Broadcasting Corp. Where is the investigation at?' she added.

"If they're not, of course, that would be a great sadness for all of us", Peter Foley said.

Speaking at a press conference today, Mr Mahathir said: "We have to come to a stage where we can not keep searching for something we can not find".

The pilot "was killing himself" and took the plane to the most remote spot he could in the southern Indian Ocean so it would "disappear", experts said.

The hunt for the missing plane formed one of the largest surface and underwater searches in aviation history.

Grace Nathan, spokeswoman for the victims' subsequent of kin assist group Voice370, mentioned Malaysia's new authorities had given the households no details about what would occur subsequent.
